Statement from the Beja Congress – Leadership Office
On the Urgent Need for Peace, Federalism, and Balanced Development
The leadership of the Beja Congress is following with deep concern the escalating military conflict, widespread famine, chaos, death, destruction, and the spread of deadly diseases across the country. Those who survived the marches have succumbed to cholera. We firmly believe that no political or economic progress is possible without ending the war and achieving a just and comprehensive peace.
It is painful that the Beja people—who have raised the banner of federalism since 1958—continue to suffer the harshest forms of marginalization. Yet we fully recognize that the suffering of the East is the suffering of all Sudan. From this standpoint, we declare the following:
We call on all Sudanese parties to immediately cease hostilities and open urgent humanitarian corridors to save civilians across the country. We affirm that there can be no development without peace, no peace without democratic federalism, and no justice without genuine recognition of the rights of marginalized peoples—foremost among them, the Beja. We salute all regional and international initiatives aimed at achieving peace, especially those proposed by the Quartet. We reject any partial or exclusionary solutions and demand a comprehensive political process that ensures genuine representation of Eastern Sudan, free from guardianship or manipulation. We warn against the continued neglect of Eastern issues, which we consider a direct threat to Sudan’s unity and stability. We declare our full readiness to actively participate in any national or international initiative aimed at ending the war and building peace—provided it is inclusive, just, and respects the will of the people. The Leadership Office strongly condemns the irresponsible statements made by authorities against the Al Hadath correspondent. These remarks lack professionalism and undermine the cause of freedom in Sudan. We appeal to our comrades in South Sudan, especially the leaders Salva Kiir and Riek Machar, to move beyond the logic of guns, arrests, and imprisonment. Such practices deepen the crisis rather than resolve it. We urge South Sudanese leaders to engage in dialogue and find a solution that satisfies all parties—setting aside weapons in favor of negotiation. We also call on all political leaders to sit down immediately, without preconditions, to resolve disputes through dialogue and to end the suffering of our people in the East and throughout Sudan. In conclusion, we affirm that the voice of the Beja will remain a voice for peace, dignity, and justice. We will not be part of any project that reproduces injustice or entrenches exclusion.
We affirm: Federalism is the solution.
