A Call for Accountability: The Urgent Need to Reassess U.S. Policy in Sudan
- **U.S. Strategy Fails: Enabling RSF's Genocidal Campaign in Darfur and War Crimes in Sudan**
- **UAE's Role Exposed: Complicity in War Crimes and Human Rights Violations**
- **Biden's Statement Lacks Substance: No Real Accountability for RSF's Atrocities**
- **Peace Negotiations in Question: Including UAE Only Perpetuates the continuation of RSF genocidal war; ElFasher is an example of that**
The recent statement from President Joe Biden regarding the ongoing crisis in Sudan highlights the harrowing humanitarian situation faced by millions. However, the U.S. approach remains woefully inadequate and dangerously misaligned with the realities on the ground. The continuation of this enforced strategy not only undermines the aspirations of the Sudanese people but also emboldens the UAE-backed Rapid Support Forces (RSF), allowing them to perpetuate genocide in Darfur and commit egregious war crimes across the country.
For over 17 months, the Sudanese population has suffered unimaginably, with nearly 10 million people displaced and countless lives lost. The president’s call for both the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF to cease hostilities and facilitate humanitarian access is commendable in theory, but it fundamentally lacks the necessary enforcement mechanisms and also condemnation and call out of the real perpetrators to ensure compliance. The RSF’s siege on El Fasher, which has escalated into a full-scale war crimes for the last 11 months or so with shelling civilian’s neighbourhoods killing hundreds of local population. Furthermore the targeting of vital infrastructure such as aid supplies depots and hospitals putting all out of service. All of the aforementioned underscores the urgency of direct and decisive action—something that has been glaringly absent from U.S. policy.
One of the most critical failures of the U.S. response has been the lack of accountability for the RSF, a group that has not only been implicated in war crimes but has also received substantial logistical and military support from the UAE. Ignoring the role of the UAE in this conflict is tantamount to turning a blind eye to the root causes of the violence. Any viable solution must include a condemnation of the UAE’s actions and hold them accountable for their role in weaponising and supporting the RSF. Without this essential component, any proposed resolution is nothing more than an empty promise—an illusion of peace that could very well lead to further devastation for the people of Sudan.
The statement mentions the establishment of “the Aligned for Advancing Lifesaving and Peace in Sudan (ALPS) Group”, which includes the UAE as a key partner. This is deeply troubling, as it suggests a tacit acceptance of the very forces exacerbating the crisis. How can we expect meaningful progress when those who actively contribute to the violence are included in peace negotiations؟ The lack of deterrence against the RSF, coupled with the absence of accountability for their actions, has only served to prolong the genocidal war and deepen the humanitarian catastrophe.
Furthermore, the Biden administration's insistence on engaging both sides of the conflict equally diminishes the severity of the RSF's actions, which have disproportionately targeted civilians. The RSF’s systematic campaign of violence and ethnic cleansing warrants immediate condemnation and action.
As a union advocating for the rights and dignity of the people of Darfur and Sudan, we urge the U.S. government to reassess its current strategy. A different approach is not just needed; it is imperative. The ongoing turmoil threatens not only Sudan but the entire region, and without robust action against the RSF and their backers, the cycle of violence is likely to continue unabated.
In conclusion, we call upon the Biden administration to prioritise genuine accountability and deterrence in its dealings with Sudan. Any solution that does not confront the UAE and its complicity in the crisis is a disservice to the Sudanese people and a denial of justice. The time for empty promises has passed; the people of Sudan deserve real action and a commitment to their future—one free from violence, oppression, and genocide.
