DARFUR Union in the UK: Nyala City under Heavy Shelling, the Civilians are at the Receiving End; A Plea to the International Community
The latest news from Nyala, Sudan is that the situation remains tense and volatile. There have been reports of sporadic clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in recent days, and the city is on high alert. On August 12, 2023, many civilians were killed and others injured as a result of the clashes between the two factions. A resident of the city reported on August 13 that “it is the worst day since the beginning of the recent war” and the situation remains fragile. Two people were reported dead as a result of shelling between RSF and SAF. One name that can be confirmed as a causality is Omer Ali Abdullah Adam. Clashes renewed between the two parties, using heavy weapons, from dawn on Monday, August 14, 2023, to the moment of writing this report. The RSF are concentrated in Texas and Karari neighbourhoods with the aim to enter the SAF central command compounds across the Nyala Wadi. These neighbourhoods belong to local civilians and currently are very populous. It is now being used as a shield. This is resulting in many casualties. Alwihda Hospital, in the southern part of Nyala has received 50 persons, a source from the hospital mentioned that. 2 were reported dead on admission; 33 were treated in the hospital Afor minor injuries; 10 are in critical condition and in need for immediate operations; 5 were transferred to the Turkish hospital in the city to the orthopaedic department.
The intensity of the fighting abs shelling in particular has increased dramatically since 2 am Saturday the 12th of August. The fighting in Nyala is part of a wider conflict that has been raging in Sudan since April 2023. The RSF has committed war crimes and crimes against humanity during this latest conflict, and the fighting in Nyala with SAF has raised concerns possible repeat of the scenario of Elgeneina if the city is fallen at the hands of RSF.
The war crimes committed in Elgeneina and Mistri (ref. 1), Sirba (ref. 2), Murnei (ref. 3); also in other parts of the region such Zallengei (ref. 4) and Kutum (Ref. 5) were all covered in the Union’s periodically issued reports. This serious crimes also extended to include looting of local markets, people belongings, selective targeting of leaders of the local communities, people who raise awareness regarding advocacy and human rights, one to mention is the recent kidnapping and killing of a few lawyers (Dr. Mohamed Mursal Mustafa who lost his life after his house in Omdurman was shelled on 4th August 2023; Also the kidnapping and killing of Mohammed Abdullah al-lord in Nyala (ref. 6)).
The fighting in Nyala has also had a devastating impact on the civilian population. Hundreds of people have been displaced from their homes, and many have been injured or killed. The humanitarian situation in Nyala is dire, and the United Nations has warned that the conflict is driving the country to collapse. The future of Nyala is uncertain. The fighting between the SAF and the RSF shows no sign of abating, and the humanitarian situation in the city is deteriorating. It is unclear how long the city can withstand the violence.
The people of Darfur have suffered for too long. The world must act now to end their suffering. Here are some specific actions that the international community and aid agencies can take: Put pressure in the waring parties to stop the fighting and shelling in Nyala and other cities. Put pressure on RSF and its Janjaweed branches to stop the violence and allow humanitarian aid to reach those in need. Provide immediate humanitarian assistance to the people of Darfur, by securing a safe passage of aid from PortSudan to the affected areas, including food, water, shelter, medicine and other essential supplies. Establish safe zones in Darfur where civilians can be protected from the Janjaweed militias. This can only happen by empowering existing peace forces and providing them with a clear Mandate.
The ongoing meaningless war in the Capital of Sudan, Khartoum, between the Sudan Arm Forces (SAF) and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) will further ignite the fuel of violence against the civilians in the region and moreover, will prolong the genocide in Darfur.
We call upon the international community to fulfil their pledges towards the victims of Genocide by implementing the “Never Again” and transforming it from a slogan to an action on the ground.
