On 20th March 2019, Sudan Armed Forces planted Anti-Personnel (AP) land mines around a water point in Hajar Bago, near al-Azrag in Heiban County of the Nuba Mountains Region. Al-Azrag is a SAF garrison Town about 7-9 km from Hajar Bago village. The AP land mine exploded on Wednesday March 20th, killing two young children and wounding three (3) others.
A locally formed committee of investigation provided enough evidence to show that the AP land mine is freshly planted by SAF stationed at al-Azrag. The committee also provided names of the deceased children as: Kallo Diryia; and ii) Komi Arish; and the names of the three wounded ones as: i) Khamis Osman Kacho, ii) Komi Zakaria and iii) Gamar Eldin Kodi.
The local community in the area has also observed unusual SAF movements in the area over the last few weeks before this horrible incident which explained the bad intention of the regime. This is a clear act of aggression against the civilian population in that particular area and all over the liberated areas.
It is well-known that the use of AP land mines is prohibited by international conventions and Sudan is party to these conventions. With this act, Sudan government is clearly violating its obligation and commitment to abide by applicable international conventions.
Despite Omer al-Bashir’s public declaration of a unilateral ceasefire (CF) while addressing a rally in Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan/Nuba Mountains state, he is actually ordering the building-up of SAF and allied militia in the two areas of Nuba Mountains and Blue Nile; clearly violating his own unilateral ceasefire; with a wicked intention to restart violent confrontation with the SPLA-N. This is an attempt also divert the attention from the successful uprising and protests against the regime in the cities, towns and villages of Sudan.
We, therefore, condemn in the strongest terms possible the Khartoum regime for killing of the innocent children in the Nuba Mountains, Blue Nile and Darfur regions. We also urge the international community at large, and especially the human rights groups, to condemn this brutal incident and bring those culprits to the book of law and justice.
