Dutch cabinet to approve sending peace monitors to southern Sudan

11/19/2005 9:27am

THE HAGUE - The Dutch cabinet is set to approve sending several dozen military and police personnel to monitor a peace accord in the southern Sudan, the Volkskrant reported on Friday.

Development Minister Agnes van Ardenne told the daily that the Dutch contribution to the 750-strong European force would be dedicated to stability and reconstruction.

“This is new, the first real example of cooperation with the Ministry of Defence in despatching ground troops,” she said.

The cabinet was to approve the mission formally at its weekly Friday evening session in The Hague.

Ministers were also to discuss a request from special envoy Jan Pronk, a former Dutch cabinet member, to send monitors to the Darfur region in the west of Sudan.
