Uganda to train southern Sudanese police, prisons officers

KAMPALA, Apr 7, 2005 (Xinhua) -- Uganda is to train over 250 senior police and prisons officer of the southern Sudanese region which attained peace after 21 years of civil war.

Uganda's police spokesman Asuman Mugenyi told Xinhua by telephone on Thursday that the Sudanese authorities contacted Uganda to train over 250 officers in batches of 50.

Mugenyi said that the officers will be trained at Kibuli Police Training School in Kampala, noting that the drills will start in May and each group would be trained for three months.

He noted that the exercise is organized by the British Council.

Southern Sudan attained peace after the main rebel group in the region, Sudanese People's Liberation Movement/Army signed a peace agreement with the Khartoum government early this year, ending the 21-year civil war that devastated the region leading to the
