Sudanese FM Ali Karti Making Three-day Visit To US


KHARTOUM, Jan 25 (BERNAMA-NNN-SUNA) -- Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Karti has left for the United States for a three-day visit during which he is to meet with a number of American officials, members of the US Congress and American research centres.

In a press statement to SUNA here Monday, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesman Khalid Musa said the minister's visit was in the context of the dialogue, exchange of views and the peace process in Sudan.

He added that Karti would meet US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton to discuss the political developments in relations between Sudan and Washington and in conducting a transparent dialogue on the obstacles facing normalization of bilateral relations.

Karti, who left here Monday, will express Sudan's aspiration of removing the name of Sudan from the American list of countries sponsoring terrorism and beginning procedure for lifting the economic sanctions imposed on Sudan under the pledges given by Washington on the matter after the holding of the referendum of South Sudan earlier this month.

The spokesman said the Foreign Minister would hold a series of meeting in Washington to review the peace process and to renew the commitment to implement the remaining items in the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement signed by north and south Sudan and to solve the pending issues through negotiation.

Musa added that the Sudanese and American sides were expected to discuss the issue of the writing off of Sudan's debts as well as the ongoing efforts to solve Darfur issue.

The spokesman said Khartoum would witness the visit of a senior American official but did not identify the person and added that the visit of the Foreign Minister to Washington was regarded as part of endeavours to enhance the political dialogue between Sudan and the United States.
