Sudan: UNAMID, Government Commit to Prison Reform in Darfur
21 February 2010
Today witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at UNAMID's headquarters in El Fasher, North Darfur, between the Mission's leadership and Rule of Law Division and the Sudanese Directorate-General of Prisons and Reform to improve the management of prisons and the living conditions of inmates in Darfur's prison system.
Deputy JSR Henry Anyidoho and acting Deputy Director of Mission Support Duncan Robinson joined the Director-General of Prisons and Reform, Maj Gen Abu Ubeida Suleiman Abdulkareem, the Director of Prisons of North Darfur, Brig Gen Babikir Ali Ahmed Nasr, and their delegation in signing the agreement. Welcoming the delegations, DJSR Anyidoho expressed appreciation for the longstanding working relationship with the North Darfur Prison Authority.
The MoU aims at providing a framework for deeper collaboration between the two parties and clarifying their roles and responsibilities in the implementation of their respective mandates. The parties will work with other stakeholders to carry out such duties as training and capacity-building for prison personnel, improving prison facilities, and promoting prisoner rehabilitation programmes.
Mr. Germain Baricako, Director of UNAMID's Rule of Law division, emphasised the importance of this understanding, asserting his expectation that it's implementation will "help to provide prison support in a more systematic, coordinated and concentrated manner."
