AU and UNAMID officials pledge to work hand in hand for peace in Darfur
Addis Ababa, Feb. 3 (SUNA) -The Joint Special Representative (JSR) Professor Ibrahim Gambari and African Union Commission Chairperson Mr. Jean Ping, on Wednesday exchanged views on a number of issues relating to Sudan and specifically Darfur, the spokesperson for the United Nations -African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) Nouredine Mezni said in a statement to the Sudan News Agency (SUNA)
. According to Mezn both reiterated their commitment to work towards a lasting peace for Darfur and its people in the context of Sudan and the country's socio-economic and political development
Mezni said the Joint Special Representative Professor Ibrahim Gambari was formally received at the AU Commission Head Quarters in Addis Ababa by the Chairperson of the Commission, Mr. Jean Ping, who assured him of his "full confidence and support" to carry out his new and challenging assignment as the AU-UN Joint Special Representative in Darfur and Head of UNAMID
Professor Gambari has meanwhile pledged to "uphold, defend and promote the hybrid nature of the Mission as a symbol of the AU-UN strategic partnership in supporting peace in Africa."
Mezni said professor Gambari has meanwhile promised to do everything possible to make UNAMID a successful Mission in order to serve as a model for joint peacekeeping operations in Africa
Professor Gambari also seized the opportunity to congratulate the AU Commission Chairperson on the success of the 14th AU Summit and for organizing a high level consultative meeting on the future of Sudan involving a number of heads of state as well as the UN Secretary General, Mezni said, adding that the JSR Gambari pointed out that this meeting was very useful in adding momentum to the peace process in Sudan in this critical year which will witness the first general democratic elections in the country
Professor Gambari was accompanied during his meeting by a number of UNAMID officials including Mr. Mohamed Yonis, DJSR for Operations and Management
