President Al-Bashir Declares Immediate Cease-Fire in Darfur


Khartoum, Nov. 12 (SUNA)- President of the Republic, Field Marshal Omer Al-Bashir, has declared immediate and unconditioned cease-fire in Darfur, provided that an effective and joint mechanism shall be formed from all parties and the joint forces of the African Union and the United Nations (UNAMID). In his address at the Friendship Hall Wednesday by the end of the Forum of the People of Sudan on Darfur Issue, President Al-Bashir said that such a move aims to pave the way for carrying out the peace process, affirm the government seriousness and good will, facilitate the activity of the humanitarian organizations operating in Darfur, boosting work of the different government institutions to provide basic services, continuity of the efforts for development, construction and rehabilitation in Darfur and reducing the risks facing the innocent citizens. President Al-Bashir said that this move will begin by defining the locations of parties, the arrangements required for the cease-fire control and administrative movements and security for the relief convoys. The President of the Republic also declared cessation of mass media campaigns till the end of the current year 2008 to emphasize the cordial spirit that characterized the Forum of the People of Sudan and to pave the way for holding the negotiations. He said that services of comprehensive security and society police will be provided at the villages and areas of the displaced people. President Al-Bashir announced the start of an immediate campaign for disarmament of all parties after entering security arrangements with the armed factions, and to enable the UNAMID forces to carry out their role for peace-keeping in Darfur.
