Onyedika resigns

After months of speculation, Dolphins FC's Head Coach, Ifeanyi Onyedika (pictured) has finally resigned his appointment with the club.

His resignation came about thirty minutes after the club's scandalous 6-1 loss to El-Merriekh in the CAF Confederation Cup on Sunday.

KICK OFF understands that Onyedika announced to the players in the bus as they returned from the stadium that the game in Sudan was his last match in charge and wished them well in the FA Cup final and other CAF Confederation Cup games.

However his letter of resignation hurriedly drafted at the clubs hotel was rejected by the Team Manager of the side, Diepreye Fiberesima.

Captain of the side, Victor Ezeji told KICK OFF he was not too pleased with the development.

"He announced to us in the bus that he had just had his last match in charge but we felt he acted too fast. We all lost the match together and all have the blame in it.

"We will still talk to him but I believe it was a personal decision. That was the last thing we expected since we just finished playing a match. We are not supposed to apportion blames but he just resigned when we have an FA Cup final in less than a week." Ezeji told KICK OFF.

Sports Commissioner, Christopher Green told KICK OFF that he is not aware of Onyedika's resignation but believes that if he is informed officially he and the team would have to move on because no one can hold the team to ransom.

"It is not palatable that we lose a match like this and the coach resigns but I must say that I have not heard about it yet and until I do I will just take it as a rumour. But if I find out it is true, we will just have to move on.

"We still have the FA Cup final and four more matches on the continent so the game must continue but first let me be informed of what is going on." Green said.

Rumours of Onyedika's sack first made the headlines in the Nigerian media about ten weeks ago after the club's slim 1-0 home win against Hassania Agadir with Sharks coach, Stanley Eguma rumoured to take over.

Eguma travelled with the team for the second leg but his take over turned out to be what it was, a rumour.

Onyedika was also suspended a month ago for what was termed his lackadaisical attitude to the job but recalled one week later.

Dolphins have an important Nigerian FA Cup final match against Rangers International in one week.
