BACKGROUND ON 46664

"A tragedy of unprecedented proportions is unfolding in Africa. Aids today in Africa is claiming more lives than the sum total of all wars, famines and floods and the ravages of such deadly diseases as Malaria"

"We must act now for the sake of the world"

"Aids is no longer a disease it is a human rights issue"

Nelson Mandela – International AIDS Conference – Paris

46664 was the prison number of Nelson Mandela on Robben Island, Cape Town where he was held in captivity for 18 years.

Nelson Mandela gave his prison number 46664 to Dave Stewart of Eurythmics in November of last year who then asked the late Joe Strummer to write lyrics for a song that included the 46664 prison number. Stewart then completed the song with Bono earlier this year and the two of them recorded it as the first of a series of co-writes together for this campaign. Further recording sessions began in March of this year when Stewart was joined by Queen's Brian May and Roger Taylor in a studio in Cape Town to lay down tracks which would also see them working in collaboration with some of South Africa's premiere musicians.

Recordings have continued ever since, with Stewart, Bono, Brian May and Roger Taylor joining with a host of other leading world artists in sessions which have taken place in London, New York and Los Angeles. To date over a dozen new tracks have been completed, or are in the final stages of being recorded.

The first of these to be heard, with the launch of the 46664 'Give 1 Minute of Your Life To Stop AIDS' campaign will be 46664 (Long Walk to Freedom)' written by Joe Strummer, Bono and Dave Stewart, performed by Bono, Youssou N'Dour, and newcomer Abdel Wright, and People written by Dave Stewart and Jimmy Cliff, performed by Sting and Jimmy Cliff.

This will be followed over the coming weeks with a series of a further ensemble and solo tracks written variously and collectively by Bono and Dave Stewart, Queen, Mick Jones (with his version of 46664), Anastacia, The Neptunes, Johnny Clegg and many more being recorded by some of the World's most well known artists including Beyonce, Brian May, Ms Dynamite, Roger Taylor, Paul McCartney, Paul Oakenfold, and Timbaland.

Having created the momentum for the creation and recording of new material which would be used to support the fight of AIDS in South Africa through the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Stewart then came up with the idea of trying to get Nelson. Mandela's prison number to work as a telephone number and web site in order to create a new way of donating and bringing awareness to Mr. Mandela's appeal.

The result was 46664, a global initiative that has brought together the leading music icons of our time to spread the message "Give 1 Minute of Your Life To Stop AIDS".

With an astounding 25% of the South African population affected by the HIV/AIDS virus, 46664 will benefit the Nelson Mandela Foundation's work in the country and raise awareness of the Global AIDS Fund's work throughout the world. In addition, 46664's aim is to raise awareness of the pandemic sweeping across the continent and to call governments into action.

The 46664 campaign is multi faceted and combines a groundbreaking music launch on the web and worldwide telephone networks, a concert which will be webcast and broadcast live to the world, a CD and a DVD. 46664 The Concert will be broadcast on the internet live on 29th November by Tiscali and in association with MTV's Staying Alive will premiere on MTV channels globally on World AIDS Day - 1st December - and will be made available rights free at no cost to all TV, radio broadcasters and internet partners worldwide to a potential audience of more than two billion people.

46664 is supported by global media partners Tiscali, and MTV's Staying Alive, global event partners Coca-Cola, BBC World Service, FedEx and Virgin Atlantic, SABC and The Fleming Media Group, and local event partners BMW, Arabella Sheraton Grand Hotel and Nissan.

In a music industry first, the music initially will only be available throughout the world via telephone lines and the web site www.46664.com powered by Tiscali. In the UK all telephone users can call a premium line using the number 09060 1 46664.

In the USA AT & T have enabled a toll free number, which will connect callers via a credit card facility to the music.

In the rest of the world arrangements will differ from country to country including in certain countries access to a 5-digit short code.

In various countries of the world (excluding North America) customers will be able to donate money via SMS. For example, in the UK, if a customer texts the word Donate to the appropriate number he will be sent a premium rate text message and charged accordingly. Nearer the event, he will also be able to purchase appropriate ring tones originated from the specially recorded songs via SMS.

Millions of people will have the opportunity to make a difference by participating in the largest ever global call-in, a global petition for action and global webcast.

Celebrities from all over the world, such as David Bowie, Robert De Niro, Pink, Shakira, and Britney Spears are all recording messages to encourage public participation.

The highlight and celebration of the campaign will be 46664 - The Concert in Association with MTV's Staying Alive at Green Point Stadium in Cape Town on 29th November 2003, the weekend before World AIDS Day (December 1)

The concert will take place in front of an audience of 40,000 and will be broadcast to hundreds of millions around the world via TV, webcast and radio. To date those international artists who have committed to joining leading South African artists Watershed, Bongo Maffin, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Johnny Clegg & Sipho Mchunu, Ladysmith Black Mombaza, Danny K, Zola, and Ready D, include Anastacia, Baaba Maal, Beyonce, Bono, Eurythmics, The Corrs, Angelique Kidjo, Moloko, Paul Oakenfold featuring Shifty Shell Shock and TC, Queen, Youssou N'Dour, and Zucchero.

In addition to the live webcast and premiering on MTV channels globally on World AIDS Day, the special is being made available rights free at no cost to all TV, radio broadcasters and internet partners worldwide. SABC in South Africa will air the concert live, and the European Broadcasting Union will distribute the programme to 71 member broadcasters in 52 countries, as well as the Asian Broadcasting Union to 74 broadcasters in 28 countries. The BBC World Service will air the concert as a special radio broadcast in 13 languages to a potential audience of 152 million people across 37 countries. Tiscali, working in partnership with other leading online providers, will web cast the entire concert live to the world.

The event is being produced by Queen's Manager Jim Beach and Chairman of Music Matrix, J F Cecillon. Funding for the event has been secured by Fleming Media Partners, of which JF Cecillon is the Managing Partner.

46664 The CD is planned for release early 2004 featuring the artists previewed on the telephone and the artists who appeared in the concert alongside additional tracks from some of the world's most outstanding artists.

46664 The DVD is planned for release March next year featuring the entire concert together with a wealth of behind-the-scenes footage.

Dave Stewart:

"We have a wonderful opportunity to raise money through global telephone networks. It's so simple. When you dial the number you will be answered by anybody from Robert De Niro to Nelson Mandela to Bono or whoever. They will then give you a message thanking you for dialling 46664 and donating a minute of your life to stop AIDS. Then you will hear a brand new song that has never been heard before written by Bono, myself, Queen, and other writers, and performed by a host of artists from Beyonce to Chad, and many many more. The only way of hearing these songs is to dial the number and by doing that you are raising money and awareness for one of the world's most serious issues of our time."

Brian May:

"The reason we got involved is that not enough is being done. Our message is - spread the word. It's only partly about making money for the cause, although that will help. It's about global awareness and a change in attitude, which is needed. AIDS is still out there, as dangerous as ever and there is a real catastrophe unfolding before our eyes in Africa. So please pick up the phone and dial the number."

Roger Taylor:

"There is so much ignorance about the subject and AIDS has become such a pandemic that it is now a human rights issue. People should have access to information and advice so they know what precautions to take. They should also have access to the drugs, which should certainly be cheaper if not freely available. 46664 is a unique idea. Through telephones we are able to reach a worldwide audience and raise money and awareness very quickly.

Jim Beach:

"Our aim is to launch a campaign to gather as many names as we can to join together across the globe to force governments to put their money where their mouths are."

J.F. Cecillon, Chairman Music Matrix and Managing Partner Fleming Media:

"46664 is not just another charity concert. The launch of 46664 heralds a long-term commitment by a consortium of global brands to make a real difference to the human rights issue of Aids in Africa. Fleming Media and Music Matrix are proud to bring together Tiscali and MTV to help deliver the convergence of technology, music, media and sponsorship in this groundbreaking concept. Only with the inspiration and support of Nelson Mandela though, could we all have made this happen today."

Bill Roedy, President, MTV Networks International & Ambassador, UNAIDS:

"The 46664 campaign is an unprecedented initiative that brings together artists, media and businesses to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS and funding for the Nelson Mandela Foundation. We will join in this partnership, under MTV's Staying Alive campaign, with all of our resources. This includes distribution on MTV channels globally and offering it rights free at no cost to any broadcaster in the world, reaching a potential audience of more than two billion people. We challenge all TV and radio broadcasters to join us in this historic event by airing the 46664 concert rights free and helping to spread the message as widely and loudly as possible."

Renato Soru, Tiscali Chairman and CEO:

"We are proud to stand alongside Nelson Mandela in this initiative. Tiscali is aware of the social responsibilities that arise from being an Internet Company. This is why we wanted to support the cause of the millions facing the catastrophe of HIV/AIDS, voicing the right to life through the Net."

Sir Richard Branson, Chairman, Virgin Atlantic:

"Today marks the launch of this unique, and under the spearhead of Mr. Mandela, incredible new charity 46664. I have had the privilege of knowing Mr. Mandela for quite a few years now and truly believe that he is the only man the world will listen to in his call to "Give 1 minute of your life to AIDS". Who else but Madiba would use his prison number 46664 - a number with which his captors for many, many years had marked him less than human - nothing more that a number. We need to join together to make 46664 a number that the world will never forget. A number that for years will bring only light to a world blackened by the epidemic that is HIV/AIDS."

Nigel Chapman, BBC World Service Deputy Director:

"The concert will be a key highlight of a two week season of bold, innovative and engaging programmes tackling the subject of HIV/Aids across all the BBC World Service's 43 language services from November 15. We hope this distinctive season will expand the knowledge of all our 150 million listeners. More than anything, we hope it will bring home the importance of HIV/Aids as a huge global issue for us all at the start of the 21st century wherever we live in the world."
