The Desert Hawks of Sudan have held the Black Stars of Ghana to a goalless draw in the 2012 African Cup of Nations Qualifier at the Babayara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.
In a game fairly dominated by the Black Stars, no goal was scored although Ghana had numerous chances through several free-kicks that were totally wasted.
Lead Striker Asamoah Gyan, failed to convert two fouls close to the goal area of the Sudanese.
Asamaoh Gyan also blew off an opportunity in the 38th minute of the first half as he failed to convert a pass laid for him in the Sudanese18 yard by Midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah.
Kwadwo Asamoah and John Painstil also could not convert their free-kicks which were both close to the 18-yard.
Ghana could have suffered from a miscommunication between Defender John Mensah and Goalkeeper Richard Kingson, as a Sudanese Striker nearly put the ball at the back of the net.
The Desert Hawks who created very few chances with in the game came back in the second half appearing more physical.
However luck eluded Ghana, as lead Striker Asamoah Gyan was sent off in the 84th Minute of the game following an encounter with a Sudanese Defender in the opponent’s goal area.
An official of the Sudanese team was sent off together with Gyan for stepping onto the pitch to protest against Asamoah’s tackle, even before the referee had taken a decision against Asamoah.
An obviously devastated Asamoah left the pitch after he had missed a golden opportunity to score, when a ball he kicked into the Sudanese goal post, was headed back to the Sudanese Goalkeeper by one of his defenders.
The South African Referee showed another yellow card to a Sudanese who deliberately used his hand on the ball.
The substitution of Agyemang Badu for Ben Kumordzi, Emmanuel Clottey for Dede Ayew and Prince Tagoe for Jordan Ayew, contributed very little to the game.
This is the first game the Black Stars have played under Ghana’s interim Coach Kwesi Appiah.
Ghana’s final chance was in the 94th minute when an indirect free-kick that could have perhaps pulled a surprise was kicked straight into the hands of the goalkeeper by Agyeman Badu who had come on as a substitute.
This is the first time Sudan has picked a point against Ghana.
The Sudanese before the game were on level point with Ghana, although Ghana led the table with three points.
They jubilated at their performance as they come on same points with Ghana with their home game in hand.
Ghana still leads the Group with four points and three goals.
Sudan is second with four points and two goals. Congo has beaten Swaziland by three goals to one after losing by two goals to Sudan in their first encounter. Ghana’s next game is against Congo.
