John Lennon shot dead
Former Beatle John Lennon has been shot dead by an unknown gunman who opened fire outside the musician's New York apartment.
The 40-year-old was shot several times as he entered the Dakota, his luxury apartment building on Manhattan's Upper West Side, opposite Central Park, at 2300 local time.
He was rushed in a police car to St Luke's Roosevelt Hospital Center, where he died.
His wife, Yoko Ono, who is understood to have witnessed the attack, was with him.
Shots heard
A police spokesman said a suspect was in custody, but he had no other details of the shooting.
"This was no robbery," the spokesman said, adding that Mr Lennon was probably shot by a "deranged" person.
Witness reports say at least three shots were fired and others have claimed they heard six.
There are also reports Mr Lennon staggered up six steps into the vestibule after he was shot, before collapsing.
Jack Douglas, Lennon's producer, said he and the Lennons had been at a studio called the Record Plant in mid-town earlier in the evening and Lennon left at 2230.
Mr Lennon said he planned to have some dinner and then return home, Mr Douglas said.
Fans at scene
The Lennons are said to have left their limousine on the street and walked up the driveway when the gunman opened fire.
It is unclear whether the man had been lying in wait in the entrance to the building for Mr Lennon, or whether he came up behind him.
Witnesses describe the gunman as a "pudgy kind of man", 35 to 40 years old with brown hair.
Other former band members, Paul McCartney, guitarist George Harrison and drummer Ringo Starr are thought to have been informed of Lennon's murder.
Fans have already begun arriving at the scene, many still unaware Lennon has died.
Mr Lennon is survived by his wife, their son Sean, and his son from a previous marriage, Julian.

لينون في مدينة ليفربول الإنجليزية عام 1940 وسط أسرة فقيرة سرعان ما غادرت أمه الحياة، قبل أن يدخل كلية الفنون الجميلة التي تركها سريعا وراء عشقه المجنون للجيتار ليؤسس مع (بول مكارتني) (جورج هاريسون) (رينجو ستار) فريق البيتلز The Beatles.. فألفوا وغنوا ولحنوا حتى أصبحوا في وقت قصير هوس العالم. .

ويرى الكاتب الأميركي الشهير غورفيدال أن لينون في الفيلم هو نشيد سلام بامتياز, ووحدها الحكومة الأميركية هي التي عارضته وحينما أصبح لينون الناطق الرسمي باسم ذلك الجيل الذي كان ينتمي له فإنه بذلك يكون كمن حكم على نفسه بالموت) ففي تلك الفترة الأكثر اضطرابا في تاريخ الولايات المتحدة بسبب حرب فيتنام وضع الرئيس الأميركي نيكسون المغني لينون تحت المراقبة كما وتعرض لينون خلال فترة الحملة الانتخابية الأميركية لمضايقات من قبل الاستخبارات ويكشف الفيلم وبشكل موثق أن الحكومة الأميركية حاولت إبعاده عن أراضيها بناء على رسالة أرسلها السيناتور ...... معتقدا إمكانية إفساد مخطط لينون في القيام بجولة غنائية للدفاع عن السلام, وبما أن نيكسون كان يعد عدته لإعادة انتخابه فقد خشي 11 مليون ناخب من الشبان والذين لابد وأنهم من المعجبين بفرقة البيتلز ودعاة السلام في أغلبيتهم فاقترح تورموند في مذكرته إبعاد لينون بصفته (مناهض للاستراتيجية الأميركية).

October 9, 1940 - As sirens wailed during a German Luftwaffe attack, John Lennon is born at Oxford Street Maternity Hospital in Liverpool, England to Julia Stanley and Alfred Lennon.
1956 - John’s mother buys him a guitar. He forms his first group, the Quarrymen, with pals Pete Shotton, Nigel Whalley, and Ivan Vaughan.
July 6, 1957 - John meets Paul McCartney at the Woolton Parish Church in Liverpool during a performance by the Quarrymen.
1958 - John writes his first song, “Hello Little Girl,” which is later recorded by the Beatles at their 1962 audition for Decca Records.
July 15, 1958 - John’s mother is killed while crossing the road by an off-duty policeman.
1960 - In his final year of art school in Liverpool, John forms a group with Paul, George, and Stu Sutcliffe.
August 1960 - Pete Best joins The Silver Beetles as drummer for their six week residency at a strip bar in Hamburg. Stu eventually leaves the group, and Paul takes over on bass.
