Forced Disappearance of Fur and Dajo tribe Members
On 28 November 2004, the armed forces and the Janjaweed (militias) in Land Rovers arrested 19 people ranging in age from 21 to 85 belonging to the Fur and Dajo tribe from their homes and the streets of Adwa village, 47 km North of Nyala, Southern Darfur state. According to eye witness reports, the armed forces and the Janjaweed militias took the 19 men in cars (Land cruisers). The whereabouts of the men are unknown and their families have been denied access. Their families believe the arrest and incommunicado detention of the 19 people are part of the forced disappearances taking place in Darfur.
The details of the men are as follows:
Adam Omer Idrees, 42 yrs Adam Ali Ateam, 85 yrs Abdel Aziz Mohamed Abdella, 22 yrs Abdella Tairab Saif Aldean, 21 yrs Abdella Yousif Tairab, 23 yrs Adam Suliman Abaker, 50 yrs Ibraheam Abaker Osman, 41 yrs Idrees Adam Abdella, 55 yrs Mohamed Fadul Abdella, 85 Yahya Ateam Adam, 62 yrs Hamid Abdel rahman Mohamed, 52 yrs Ibraheam Mohamed Hussein, 65 yrs Adam Hussein Abdella, 70 yrs Adam Ahmed Mohamed, 38 yrs Ishag Ahmed Mohamed Nour, 50 yrs Abdella Adam Hamad, 48 yrs Abdella Adam Abdella, 52 yrs Mohamed Ahmed Abdella, 38 yrs Ibraheam Suliman Adam, 27 yrs SOAT expresses fears for the safety of the 19 people and is calling on the GoS to give assurances that they will not be tortured or ill-treated.
SOAT strongly condemns the continued attacks and terrorisation of civilians in Darfur and urges the Government of Sudan to i:Immediately cease attacks on civilians and adhere to it commitments under the ceasefire agreement ii. Take all necessary measures to ensure the physical and psychological integrity of all the detainees iii. To allow detainees immediate and unrestricted access to their family and any medical treatment that they may need iv. Order the immediate release of all the detainees in the absence of valid legal charges, or if legitimate charges exist, bring them before an impartial tribunal and guarantee procedural rights at all times. v. Disarm the Janjaweed militias immediately and any outlaws operating in the western Darfur region. The above recommendations should be sent in appeals to the following addresses:
