Dear Raaft
While I was reading your message, I rememberd the Bishop of rebels, Bishop Macram Max. I rememberd that I have written a column in Alkhartoun newspaper in 1988 under the title " Not in the Defence of Macram Max, but in the Defence of the Truth." In that column, I was responding to the criticism of my relative, the publisher of Alkharoum newspaper, Dr. Albagir Ahmed Abdullah,Imam al- Sadig, Almahdi, and others to Bishop Macram Max ( unfortunately I don't have a copy of my Arabic article). Although he doesn't claim it, but Bishop Macram Max reminds me of the advocates of the " Liberation Theology" in the Centarl, and South America like the late Bishop of San Salvador, Bishop Oscar Romero. Please give my respect, and regards to Bishop Macram MaxSUDAN:

Bishop Macram Max Gassis, a Sudanese Catholic, is no ordinary prelate. Aged 67 and originally from Khartoum, the Bishop of El Obeid is sometimes called the "the bishop of the rebels". He ######### the (geographically) largest diocese in Sudan, almost three times the size of Italy, and he lives partly in exile, for in fact he divides his time between Nairobi in Kenya and the Nubian mountains, a region which is outside the control of the ruling islamist regime in Khartoum. Prospects for peace are slowly emerging in Sudan, following the longest civil war in Africa. Along with famine and sickness this war caused the death of some two million people and the uprooting of almost 4 million refugees over the last two decades.
However, the situation on the ground still has not yet returned to normality, and arbitrary arrests and imprisonments are still the order of the day in the country, despite the promises of President Omar Al-Bashir to release all political prisoners and to lift the state of emergency in the country. This was revealed on Wednesday 7 September by the organisation Human Rights Watch (HRW).
The much talked-about "Comprehensive Peace Agreement", signed in Nairobi on 9 January 2005, formally puts an end to the conflict that has torn Sudan apart for the last 21 years. Despite this, in the Western province of Darfur, although overwhelmingly Muslim, the bloody conflict is still far from finished.
Apic: Bishop Gassis, you travel a great deal between Nairobi and the Nubian mountains..
Bishop Gassis: I am forced to do so because I cannot live at the actual seat of my diocese in El Obeid, which is in the government controlled area. When I leave Nairobi in Kenya for the Sudanese-Kenyan frontier, at Lokichoggio, I have to travel by plane, because it is not safe for me to travel across Sudan by road in order to reach the Nubian mountains.
Apic: You are referring to the guerrilla army of John Garang, who has just been appointed vice-president of Sudan, following the peace accords in Nairobi... He was killed in a helicopter accident on 30 July.
Bishop Gassis: John Garang, who signed the peace accords after having led the guerrilla war against the regime in Khartoum for 21 years, had been nominated as the first vice-president of Sudan just three weeks before his death. I knew him very well and I think I was the only person who called him "Brother John", while everyone else called him "Dr John", because he had gained a doctorate in agricultural economy in the United States. He was a Dinka and a Christian - I believe he was Episcopalian (Anglican). His successor as vice-president, Salve Kiir Mayardit, is also a Dinka, which is the largest tribe in the South, but he is a Catholic.
A: Will the death of John Garang undermine the peace accords?
Bishop Gassis: I do not think that any one of us on this earth is indispensable. Useful, certainly, but not indispensable. The Italians have a proverb: “One Pope dies, so they make another”! John Garang was a symbolic figure; he was well known, because he controlled practically everything... Salva Kiir is a military man, a very simple person. He has never really been a politician. I am confident, because John Garang has brought about a solution that is dignified and peaceful.
Apic: Are the members of the traditional African religions more numerous than the Christians?
Bishop Gassis: They are in a majority among the non-Muslims and there is a great deal of work to be done to evangelise them. Now is the time when the missionary congregations should be coming, before it is too late.
Saudi Arabia has already invested almost 30 million dollars to develop the Islamic presence in the country. It is building dispensaries, doing development work with the women folk - exactly the same things we are doing. But unfortunately we do not have the manpower, pastorally, and a number of missionary congregations are unwilling to come and settle in our regions, which are under threat of islamisation. At the present time God is giving so many opportunities; if we do not grasp them now, they will never come again!
I am like a voice crying in the wilderness. Certainly, Sudan is a difficult place, but in my view the missionaries of today too often seek comfort; they will not accept real challenges! As for security, if it's dangerous for them then it's also dangerous for me and for the population as a whole. If one is a missionary one must be ready to give one's life for Christ. In the Nubian mountains I live in the bush, with no electricity, no running water. We travel on foot in the mountains. Since I suffer from diabetes, it is sometimes a real torture walking in the heat. Sometimes the SPLA soldiers have to carry me, to put me on a bicycle or a donkey in order to transport me
Apic: What about Rome? Do they understand your situation and your particular problems?
Bishop Gassis: Some of them do, others do not; it depends on whom you're talking to. I really appreciated our meeting with the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith during the ad limina visit of the Sudanese bishops. There they do understand our difficult situation, and I spoke without mincing my words. I said that it is no good asserting that the Church is gaining ground in Africa, when Islam is going much faster!
I am tired of people pointing their finger at us and urging us to engage in dialogue with Islam, when nobody has yet given me a definition of what dialogue means. I am certainly not going to throw my moral principles and my spiritual life to the four winds in return for peanuts. No!
Apic: So you have a practical rather than a theoretical concept of dialogue with Islam then?
Bishop Gassis: I have no wish for people to say of me that I am a good bishop because I engage in dialogue... Is dialogue supposed to be based on ignorance? How many bishops have a real knowledge of the Koran? How many of them have studied it? As for me I know the practical reality on the ground, not the kind of dialogue at the summit, which never leads anywhere when we tackle certain religious topics. For me Jesus is the Son of God and there is no room for discussion about this, whereas for the Muslims he is merely a prophet. Why can we not leave religion on one side and simply live together, side by side like, brothers and sisters in humanity?
I believe in the dialogue of life. When I have a school and half the pupils are Christians and the other half Muslims, then that is dialogue. When I build a maternity clinic, the women who come to have their babies are Protestants, Catholics, adherents of the traditional African religions, and Muslims. If I dig a well, the water is neither Christian nor Muslim; it is for everybody. That is dialogue, not selling ourselves cheaply, just so we can say that we are in favour of dialogue! I see some tendencies in this direction in Europe - people who want us to keep quiet in the face of Islamic fundamentalism, on the pretext that the Christians have done the same kind of thing in the past, notably during the Crusades!
The current situation
Bishop Macram Max Gassis wants to return to his diocese and he is also hoping that it will be divided into three administrations. Thanks to the peace accords, Bishop Gassis is hoping to be able to return to his diocese already during the course of this present year. But he will wait to resume his duties until Monsignor Antonio Menegazzo, the Italian Comboni missionary who was appointed as apostolic administrator of El Obeid in 1996, when Bishop Gassis himself was forced into exile, reaches the age of 75 years.
Moreover, in the region of the Nubian mountains, the Sudanese Bishop Gassis has developed a pastoral strategy in the English language, whereas in the government-controlled zone everything was arabised under pressure from the fundamentalists. Throughout all those years of isolation the Nubian mountains have developed their own priorities with regard to education and formation, with the result that all the young catechists speak English.
Bishop Macram Max Gassis left El Obeid in 1990 for treatment in Europe and the United States for a cancer of the bile duct. But when he tried to return to his diocese, he was warned that he would be arrested for having given evidence of the atrocities of the islamist regime in Khartoum, - the massacres, the enslavements, the rapes, the persecution - before the United States Congress. And so he decided not to return to the government-controlled zone. Today the people there are waiting for the return of their shepherd. But he is hoping that his diocese, which is too vast for a single bishop, can be divided in future into three new dioceses, namely El Obeid and North Kordofan, Darfur, and the Nubian Mountains.
