We had received information that on June 10th 2003 Mr. Ibrahim Adam Ibrahim Rasheed, 40 years, from Toumbouray, 85-km northwest of Kuttum in Northern Darfur State, was shortly released after three months in detention. Unfortunately, he was re-detained on June 11th 2003, when he went to the National Security offices in AlFashir claiming back his four-wheel-drive Toyota car, which was confiscated by the authorities in March 2003. Mr. Rasheed told friends that he was held incommunicado in a small cell on a cement floor, with no light. He told his friends that he ought to sleep on his legs and his back to the wall due to space insufficiency. He was subjected to torture by beating on his feet and his back. Mr. Rasheed told his friends that his situation was better than the educated ones. The interrogators were abusing, mocking, and splitting on them. When his friends were celebrating his one-day-freedom, he told them that many are still incommunicado, and were shouting to him from their cells to pass their greetings to the beloved ones. After the uprising of the Sudanese Liberation Movement/Army in Darfur States in last February, the Government of Sudan adopted aggressive measures against its African civilians, namely, Fur, Zagawa, and Masaleit, a group, which form the majority of the population in Darfur States, western Sudan. The authorities deem any mature male from the said group, a possible supporter and/or militant of SLM/A. Many were arbitrarily detained, and others have been taken to unknown places. The authorities did not present any detainee in front of any impartial law tribunal. Worries are intensified that they may be presented in front of the special terrorism court which is to be formed by the decree of the Minister of Justice released on June 15, 2003. -------------- Mustafa - Kuttum 16-june-03
