Jertig is one of Sudanese deeply-rooted customs of wedding. It brings a good omen and keeps a way newly-wedded from being bewitched. Jertig celebration starts with preparing Angareb that is a wooden bed directed to Kiblah , the Muslim praying direction. A red appealing sheet is laid on the bed encircled with fronds of a palm-tree to invoke blessing. Some people believe that Jertig is a protection against envy and brings about fortune and wealth. It‘s a custom which is still preserved by members of Sudanese families. Haja Aeisha thinks that Jertig is a preventive means against evil and an amulet against Jinn. The red colour in Jertig is essential lest there is a delay in pregnancy or an abortion out of an evil eye.
Jamila Mahjoub thinks that Jertig is one of the most beautiful inherited traditions. Jertig rituals begin with a red dress and a silk costume embroidered with a gold. Then, there is a a hat or golden coins with a mass of red silk tied on the wrist of newly-wedded girl and in the middle of the wrist-ring there is a large bead. After that, the bridegroom is seated on a bed greeted with ululations that mark the inception of Jertig ceremony.
The bridegroom’s family turns up with their son carrying a black rosary-bead, a gilted crescent laid on hankerchief wrapped around the fore-head of bridegroom provided that he is clad in “Surti” a traditional garment prepared for the occasion. He holds his gold-in-laid sword and waves it gleefully as he dances at the beat of Jertig enthusiastic songs.
The celebration goes on with the bride’s mother displaying the lovely –furnished bed ofJertig on which is laden a piece of silver-colored iron that contains sweets and dates, different Sudanese home – made perfumes such as Sandal, flour Damoor in addition to exotic perfumes imported from Paris, powered of Mahlab (perfume) , cups of milk and Sudanese incense.
The elder women put on the bride a gilted head-cover , black beads, a red silk on the right wrist and a little paste of “Khomora” that is a nice Sudanese solid perfume placed on the midst of bride’s hair before she meets the bridegroom. When they meet each, they swap with one another some dates and sweets seven times. In the seventh time they circulate the exchanged dates and sweets to the audience of wedding. After the end of such a rite, the newly-wedded couples sprinkle each other with milk midst the jubilation of spectators. Then , the festive a atmosphere is being refreshed with wafted perfume sprayed on the audience that take part in singing in sweet voices for the bride to join the dance in the tempo of Jertig songs. And in the harmony of joy and peace ends the celebration of Sudanese Jertig. Source:Rakoba website..
