Salam Taky ya Jawahir

How is the cycle of life at your end? ....I really missed those warm rainy nights of that part of Juba ...atlaa3 barra... !!! The forcible sounds of the equatorial rain pouring heavily on those corrugated galvanized iron roofs of the university houses. I found myself between awake and sleep. At those moments of night, my spirit flies free to haunt places beyond my reach..!! That is when the queen of poems gives me the necessary dose of inspiration.

Salam Taky Jawahir

How is the long weekend in Ottawa? I hope the children are ready for their new schooling year. It is the start of the Fall semester and it seems you are busy getting things in order.
I am getting ready to leave for the Middle East soon as my summer break is over. I called it the (Winter and Summer Journey) since I shuttle between Doha and Calgary every semester !!

Lucky you escaping our harsh winter...great lifestyle to be in summer here then in winter in a sunny place like Doha...
if I were you, I won't ask for more-just hate too much cold :)
Our long weekend flying so fast and tomorrow back to work for me and back to school for the boys...
still some paper work has to be done...its go-go lifestyle...can not wait for my next break in 6 weeks.

Wish you a safe trip

Salam taky and Eid Mubarak Jawahir

Hamdulillah I arrived Doha and almost settled down.....Fortunately, the Eid ten days break just started this weekend and it is a nice chance to enjoy the meat, relax and write to friends. The weather is fantastic nowadays as the refreshing breathe of winter finally arrived adding to the glorious festive mood of Eid Al Adha. Inshallah on Tuesday, we will enjoy shia and meat from Kharoof Al Eid. My Canadian friend told me he is a vegetarian and he will not share with us the shia . I am a (meatarian) by birth...as I am a Dongolawi ....the only thing I may miss is the Sharboat drink....maybe I get lucky to find a friend who knows how to make it!!! In my home town Argo in Northern Sudan, I remember our Sharboat drink was so strong ....enough to knock you down sleeping in the first day of Eid ...!!!! The Dongolawai muftis insisted it is completely halal...!!!

Anyway...Eid Mubarak to you and to your family and friends in Ottawa ...

Ibrahim

Dear Ibrahim, salam taky...
So glad to hear back from you...Eid Mubarak le eta ...great that you are enjoying Eid in Doha...it must be the perfect time for all "Meatarian" like you
to enjoy the shia and Kamonia...I guess missing Sharboot won't be a big deal probably Coca Cola can do just fine...
I was laughing when you mentioned "The Dongolawai muftis insisted it is completely halal" as it can knock you down that way...
I remember my father "Allah yerhamo" used to like Sharboot too in Eid and he was ok with it as long as not fermented too much
and does not have that knocking effect...I guess he was doubting that Dongolawai Muffti :)
I have a little story about the kharoof, can you believe when I was young in Juba I do not eat meat in Eid because I feel sorry for the kharooof as my father use to bring the kharoof few days before the Eid day then me and my brother will always develop a unique bond with the Kharooof and we feel sorry
for him I used to feel sad and refuse to see the slaughter process...not until I was in high school that I start eating it again....
Let you enjoy the shaia then will tell you about another story about why I never and will never eat The Head of kharooof....
wala balash better not to ruin your appetite ...hahahaaa

Eid Mubarak

Salam Taky le eta Jawahir
The last remains of the Kharoof were gone...! The head was never part of the menu.....it was taken by the butcher...But I love Kamoonia... so I took the burden of cleaning it with water at first then soak it into vinegar for almost an hour !! It was an excellent and healthy way to take the strong smell out of Kamoonia. It was a new effective way I learnt from a dear friend....!!!!

Now you can tell your story of avoiding eating the head of the Kharoof.....Believe me it was a delicasy here in Qatar....it must come with the whole Kharoof over a huge tray of Basmati rice in Qatari weddings/invitations ( one tray could be lifted by five to eight people...) ....with the tongue jutted out by its side.....sometimes it is very embrassing if somebody gives you a piece of the head or tongue as the custom here is to present it to the elderly guests within the group....!!! Qatari old folks enjoy the tongue or I see them sometimes goughing the eyes ....!!! I was invited the second day of Eid to a dinner by the Dosari tribe shiek in the west part of Doha(Shahania), I avoided touching the head spare parts or the fatty parts of the Kharoof.....!!! However, the rice mixed by yogurt was superb...very tasty ..!!
I think our sudanese way of preparing shaia over the coal is very healthy compared to the Qatari way of preparing Kharoof with its whole fat over the rice...!!

Salam taky Ibrahim...
Interesting to know about Qatari tradition of cooking kharoof, it seems like they are really generous people...
I agree with you, our way of cooking Shia way healthier than theirs…
Since head of your kharoof ended up with the Butcher, then no worries about ruin your appetite
with my story…. People with sensitive stomach please do not read the story…it is gross...sorry in advance for any discomfort...!!

So, one day...long ago… when I was young, I saw how my mom ”Allah yerhamha” clean the head of kharoof…
after removing the skin, cutting the ear cleaning the throat, tongue and the nose with plenty of water came the traumatic step
which was hitting the head-nose first- against a flat piece of rock few times to clear the sinuses from mucous…it was an obvious
important step which ended up with 2-3 big worms coming out of the nose with a nasty green secretion (obviously the poor
kharoof was suffering from a complicated chronic sinusitis)..loool… since that day it never crossed my mind to try to eat any
part of the head….now you telling me the Qatari people cook the whole thing together…hmmmm…if I am in front of that big dish
probably will be imagining one of those worms mixed with the rice…unless I gave myself a good session of Post Traumatic Desensitization to recover first…
may be telling myself that kharoofs in Qatar less likely will have bad sinusitis like that one in Juba…loool

By the way, give yourself big credit for knowing how to clean and prepare Kamonia, it is not an easy task for sure...thumb up

This Eid brought lots of childhood wonderful memories....Eid day, Kharoof, family, faces, places...I am amazed by knowing how
some simple details and events of childhood can shape who we are...!!! the value of family in children's life...lots to learn
about ourselves going through cycle of life...self reflection, understanding and realization of the depth of human experiences
and relation to others...and the question why we have to wait for certain events like Eids or time off work to focus on joy and happiness instead of incorporate it to our daily life...?!!
and is it selfish to be joyful when you know at the same moment somebody somewhere in deep pain because for example he/she had just lost a loved one?!!..the concept of survival guilt...etc...
In my professional work we were taught it is crucial to take care of ourselves in order to be able to take care of others as part of every day Job is dealing with human suffering...it is so challenging to have that type of balance between being empathetic to feel for others and avoid going so deep and compromise the peace with in....so, always Eid is a good time to just be selfish a little bit to focus on self...but this one for some reason not totally the way I dreamt of....and I know exactly why...!!
.
.
can not write the above thought in arabi Juba...sometimes I just let my mind to flow with whatever language comes first

So many people ya Jaafar closed to me are there....and the idea of any person and civilian in south to not feel safe and to go through
struggle and suffer again is really sad and heart breaking, no one any where on earth should suffer, and people of south they already gone
through hell and it is enough... I feel sad and sometimes angry why those leaders subjecting people to all this, kefaia wallay
:(((((

Salam Taky Jawahir
I was in Sudan for 50 days ..!! Sudaneseonline was completely shut out there. I feel like I am losing touch with the worsening situation over thee. Garbage was accumuIated in every street...( the irony is that they still charge people for garbage collection). Not a single street with night lights on ...and people are driving with high beam lights through these miserable pumpy roads. Sewer water floods everywhere with a smelly odour... Prices are jumping up by the day... Frankly I feel I am losing what I used to call... home sweet home...!!! I just came back to Doha and I breathed relief...!!!

I feel sorry for the situatin in Southern Sudan. I don't think the struggle around power should spill to tribal genocide. My fear is that within these situations, sectarian violence might be expected too... just like what is happening in CAR nowadays!!
I wish you enjoy the remaaining holidays with some relaxation and trying to focus away from these events.
Salam
Ibrahim

Dear Jawahir
Salam taky wa Happy New Year full of joy and happiness.
Alhamdu lilahi weled tay bega kowais. kaman ana ligo akhbar ta ashabi fi Juba wa Bor. hom gadiro wasulu Juba maa nas ta unamis.. lakin hom galo Bor karabu tamam. No sign of life at all..Bodies are scattered in the streets. Only Nweer troops are controlling the city. kalam ta Dinka-Nweer dushman ma bkalasu gareeb.ana ge asalu rabana kele yahfaz nas ta Juba and Bor.
ana mabssot kaman ahal taki hom bikhair.
I received telephone call yesterday from my relative living in Juba( Ali Ibrahim) who told me good news about my friends in Bor and Juba. Also I talked to a Japanese lady married to a Canadian Sudanese who was working in Bor. She told me that her husband was safe and should be by now in Juba waiting to get a flight to Khartoum.. My friend's name is Berair from Tendalti.
The fight between Nweer and Dinka has a very long history. To make life difficult it has now turned into power struggle and it will not end peacefully. I share you the feeling that people of south Sudan suffered too much during the last 50 years and they should not be subject to more ordeals.I lost any hope that the present leaders will do anything good for the south.
Stay well

Salam takom my dear Ibrahim and Jaafar
Deeply sorry for the delay in my response to both of you
I got extremely busy with family and work, in addition to the predominant feeling of sadness
whenever I come across news of the conflict in South Sudan or reading about any human being suffering anywhere
Plus worry too much about family back home...it was just too much to bear ...I guess I reach the
stage of acceptance and decided to move on as there is nothing I can do and sadness won't change anything

I appreciate your words
Thanks a lot
Will be back
