On Thursday, 21 people were arrested in Barra locality in North Kordofan, on charges of assaulting policemen.
Those arrested belong to a group of people who live in Adeed El Ureifia, in the western part of Barra, who staged a protest on Thursday morning against the allocation of a large piece of land to a resident of the area. The new owner intends to start an agricultural project.
The Commissioner of Barra, Mubarak Shummo, explained to the press later that day that when he, accompanied by other notables, went to deliver the land to the project owner, a group of residents assaulted the policemen accompanying them. The police arrested 21 protestors.
Omda Babikir El Alim, native administration leader of the area, denied the attack on the police to Radio Dabanga. He pointed out that the conflict was caused by other native administration leaders who donated the land without the consent of the people of Adeed El Ureifia.
