Dozens more Sudanese students and activists have been detained in “a campaign by the security forces over the past few days” following widespread unrest at universities across the country. The leader of the National Umma Party (NUP) has called for mass peaceful protest.

Witnesses told Radio Dabanga said that the arrest campaign has targeted university students in Khartoum, Darfur, Kordofan and the Red Sea States.

Radio Dabanga has obtained the names of a number of detainees in Nyala, El Obeid and Khartoum.

One of the students of the University of Nyala in South Darfur said that 40 students were arrested, 24 of them were released while 16 remain in detention.

From El Obeid, the chairman of the preparatory committee for the graduates of the University of Kordofan reported to Radio Dabanga that the names of four of the detainees of Kordofan University students have been identified.

On Thursday four students were arrested in Khartoum. They were released on Friday, but four students are still considered among the ‘missing’.

A student from the University of Khartoum told Radio Dabanga that a large number of the graduates of the University of Khartoum are still being held in the custody by the security services.

El Mahdi

The head of the Umma Party (NUP), Imam El Sadig El Mahdi, called on the Sudanese populace for peaceful protest; “to demonstrate and sit-in in hunger strikes against tyranny and corruption without violence or sabotage.”

El Mahdi called upon the people “to stand united as was done in all historical eras so as to achieve just and comprehensive peace and full democratic transformation.”

In a statement on Friday the NUP leader appealed to Sudan’s regular forces “to refuse to oppress their own people”.

Also he called upon the leaders of the regular forces to take examples from history: “These offenders have taken the home country through corruption, failure, repression ,and poor living standards to the lowest depth”.
