The Sudanese Communist Party has called the ongoing military attacks on the Jebel Marra region “an extension of the government's crimes of genocide and ethnic cleansing”.

In a statement last week, the Communist Party said that “the continued military violence in Jebel Marra and the air raids by Antonovs and helicopters on schools and hospitals, markets and villages are part of the scorched earth policy that started more than thirteen years ago”.

The opposition party accused the Sudanese ruling party of continuing “its crimes of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity against the people of Darfur” and “using mercenaries from abroad and janjaweed militias to carry out its scorched earth policy.

“Rape is widely used as a weapon of war in Darfur, while national and international justice institutions are unable to hold the perpetrators accountable and bring them to justice,” the statement reads.

More than 100,000 villagers fled their homes since 15 January this year when the government launched a major offensive on rebel strongholds in Darfur's Jebel Marra.
