Press Release: 21.09.2015

On 21 September 2015, the International Criminal Court (“ICC” or the “Court”) joins in commemorating the International Day of Peace, a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, within and among all nations and peoples.

On this International Day of Peace, the Court recalls the importance of fair and impartial justice processes in the resolution of conflicts, as well as the significance of international law in maintaining peaceful relations among nations.

“Justice for atrocity crimes, both retributive and restorative – taking into account the interests of the victims and affected communities – is an important factor for long‐term stability in post‐conflict societies”, said ICC President Judge Silvia Fernández de Gurmendi. “Accountability is also crucial for the purpose of preventing the reoccurrence of mass crimes. The support of the global community for the ICC as well as for national justice efforts is essential for achieving these goals.”

The Court benefits from the membership of 123 States Parties which continues to grow. By supporting the Court, States have taken a stand against impunity for mass crimes, recognising that such grave crimes threaten the peace, security and well-being of the world.

Background: The ICC is a court of last resort as it exercises its jurisdiction only where national criminal justice systems are unable or unwilling genuinely to do so. The Court is currently investigating nine situations and is conducting eight preliminary examinations. ICC Judges have issued 28 arrest warrants and nine summonses to appear. Proceedings against a total of 11 accused persons are currently at the trial stage. Seven suspects are in the Court’s custody while 13 remain at large.
