Khartoum, Sudan, 3 August 2015 (UNHCR): The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) welcomes a contribution of SEK 10 million (US$ 1.2 million) from Sweden to support its 2015 programme in Sudan. This financial support is not earmarked to specific activities and will therefore allow UNHCR to maintain a capacity to carry out its programme in a flexible manner.
“Such contributions are of paramount importance to ensure we can respond to the needs of all persons of concern to UNHCR in Sudan. In an ever-changing operating environment, broadly earmarked contributions enable us to not only respond quickly to new needs but also cover areas of interventions which are dangerously under-funded, in particular those that no longer draw attention, but yet deserve a robust engagement”, UNHCR Representative Mohammed Adar says.
Thanks to the Swedish contribution, UNHCR will be able to maintain a minimum operating capacity to cover the most pressing needs amongst refugees living in a protracted situation in eastern Sudan but also in Darfur, which hosts over 46,000 refugees, mainly from Chad and the Central African Republic. It will also help the Office continue engaging with internally displaced persons in Darfur, in particular in providing assistance to extremely vulnerable individuals.
“The critical humanitarian situation remains a great concern for Sweden. The work of UNHCR in Sudan, both for refugees and internally displaced persons, is both important and unique, and requires our fullest support”, the Swedish Ambassador to Sudan, Ms. Mette Sunnergren, says.
UNHCR in Sudan works with the Commissioner for Refugees (COR), the Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC), and other national institutions to protect and assist 370,000 refugees and asylum-seekers, as well as internally displaced people in Khartoum, the East, South and West Kordofan, White Nile and Darfur. UNHCR has 11 offices in Sudan and its financial requirements for 2015 amount to US$ 173.4 million.
