The National Mine Action Center of Sudan and UNMAS commemorate the Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action Day on June 13th

Khartoum, 11 June 2015

The National Mine Action Center of Sudan and the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) are commemorating the Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action Day on June 13th, 2015 at the Friendship hall in Khartoum from 17:30 to 23:00.

The event will be under the patronage of H.E. Hasabo Mohmad Abdel-Rahman, the Vice President of the Republic of Sudan, and will be attended by senior government officials, members of the diplomatic community and the United Nations system in Sudan.

The UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator a.i, Mr. El-Mustafa Belmalih will give a key note speech on behalf of the United Nations along with the UNMAS Representative, Mr. Habibulhaq Javed.

This commemoration will recognize the partnership between the Government of Sudan, and the United Nations in ensuring an effective, proactive and coordinated response to the problems of landmines.

There are currently 226 areas affected by mines and explosive remnants of war in Sudan that pose as a risk to the inhabitants of these areas.

UNMAS has been working with multiple national and international partners to address the issues of landmines in Sudan, and to raise awareness about the risk of mines on populations. Within this framework, UNMAS has re-engaged in Sudan through the opening of its new office in April 2015 in Khartoum.

The UNMAS program in Sudan will be working closely with national and international partners in order to address issues of landmines in the country.
