Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon welcomed on Sunday with relief the release of two United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) contractors who were abducted in Zalingei, Central Darfur, Sudan, on 29 January
“The Secretary-General is deeply gratified,” according to a statement issued by a spokesperson for the Organization, which added that Mr. Ban also commended the efforts made by UNAMID and expressed his appreciation to the Governments of Sudan and Russia in securing their safe release.
“He is relieved that the contractors will be able to reunite with their families and loved ones after 128 days in captivity,” the statement underscored.
In the statement, the Secretary-General underscored the importance of UNAMID's work for the people of Darfur and called on the Sudanese Government to launch a full investigation.
Two Russians kidnapped in Sudan’s Darfur in January have been freed by their captors, a spokesman for Russia’s embassy in Khartoum said on Saturday.
Both appeared in good health as they attended a press conference at the airport with the Russian ambassador and Sudanese officials.
They were abducted by an unidentified group near the town of Zalingei, capital of Central Darfur state, on Jan.29.
“According to the information we got from the National Intelligence and Security Service yesterday, they were freed in central Darfur at 7:30pm (1630 GMT),” embassy spokesman Artur Safukov told reporters.
“There was no ransom or use of force in order to release them. It was a peaceful release,” Safukov said the NISS had reported.
