Sudan’s popular delegation has travelled to United States to convince Washington to lift the sanctions imposed on Sudan since 1997.
Sudanese businessman, Isam al-Sheikh, who launched the popular initiative, told reporters on Friday that they will focus during their visit on the popular meetings to improve ties between peoples of the two nations, disclosing that the delegation which includes 14 tribal chiefs will hold meetings with congressmen and the state department officials.
He noted that US senators will visit Sudan to assess the situation in the country particularly regarding claims of extremism and terrorism, pointing out that Sudanese businessmen are the most affected by the economic sanctions which impose an embargo on Sudanese banking establishments prevent them from dealing with the international banks, stressing that the initiative aims to convince the civil society groups and congressmen that the sanctions mainly affect Sudanese people not the government.
For his part, deputy chief of mission at the US embassy in Khartoum, Benjamin Moeling, emphasized his country’s readiness to consider any move aiming to promote public diplomacy between Khartoum and Washington, noting that the visit will be welcomed by the American people, pointing out that U.S embassy has arranged several visits for Sudanese youth, media workers and businessmen within the framework of the public diplomacy.
In last February the United States Department of Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced that it had decided to loosen U.S. sanctions on Sudan via allowing exports of personal communications hardware and software including smart phones and laptops.
The Sudanese-American relations are currently witnessing signs of breakthrough as the two sides started exchanging visits by senior officials for dialogue to discuss many issues that prevented full normalization of relations between Khartoum and Washington
