Washington, DC April 29, 2015- On April 25th 2015, Voices for Sudan held its third annual Diaspora training program in New York City. The event was co-sponsored by the Columbia University School of Public and International Service-Pan African Network, International Justice Project (IJP), and Generation Citizen. The full day of training is designed to help Sudanese and South Sudanese in the U.S. to advocate for peace, stability and prosperity in their countries.
Ambassador Donald Booth, U.S Special Envoy to Sudan and South Sudan, sent a pre-recorded video from his office in Washington DC to support the efforts of the organizers and also outlined U. S policy in Sudan and South.
Ambassador Donald Booth, Special Envoy for Sudan and South Sudan
Speaking with regret on the recent failure of African Union mediated peace talks, Donald Booth explained the desires of the United States, Troika, and the international community in seeing “two countries at peace internally and with each other.” Booth also expressed concern with the recent election in Sudan and its lack of transparency and poor voter turnout, “which undermine the credibility of the electoral process.”
Ambassador Booth outlined the path forward in Sudanese negotiations, saying, “the United States stands ready to work with the Sudanese on these issues and other areas of mutual interest.” Booth went on to state the shared goal of the Sudanese people and American government for, “a new chapter in Sudan, one in which this country of vibrant communities and rich history succeeds.”
Speaking on South Sudan, Ambassador Booth explained the steps taken by the United States in reaching a negotiated peace deal between the involved parties and with the international community. Working with local communities, the United States has taken steps to monitor human rights abuses and provide humanitarian assistance to the people of South Sudan. Since the outbreak of violence in December 2013 the United States has given $1 billion to aid development and relieve the humanitarian crisis in South Sudan.
Ambassador Booth concluded his message with thanks to Voices for Sudan and their partners for their work towards creating peace. Jimmy Mulla, co-founder of VFS, also expressed his gratitude saying, “I appreciate Ambassador Booth’s message to the Diaspora as it enhances our efforts to get the Diaspora more engaged in promoting peace.”
