Sudan’s National Elections Commission (NEC) has announced that the rate of turnout in the elections amounted (42%), pointing out that the process carried out in full independence and integrity in a manner similar to the 2010 elections.
NEC chairman, Mukhtar al-Asam, told Sudan’s News Agency (SUNA) on Tuesday that this rate exceeds the global average which was higher than the turnout in the recent elections in United States and Britain.
Major Sudanese opposition parties boycotted the April presidential and parliamentary elections because President Omar al-Bashir’s ruling National Congress Party controls everything in the country.
The National Election Commission (NEC) did not release voter turnout rates during the first two days of the election, but it was reported that only 10 percent of the 13 million eligible voters casted ballots up to now.
“The campaign (Leave) to boycott the elections began to bear fruit as indicated by the masses reluctance to participate in the elections,” said a statement released on Tuesday, the second day of voting.
The statement said they received reports from all the regions attesting the low voting rate and claimed that only one percent of the eligible voters casted a ballot in the election.
