Sudanese Nongovernmental Organizations and Civil Society Associations

We, the undersigned, urge the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), the African Union (AU), member states of the United Nations, members of the international community, and all peace-loving people of the world to take an immediate and clear position regarding the current preparation for the presidential and parliamentary elections in Sudan which are scheduled to take place in the middle of April 2015. We are asking the UNSC, the AU, the UN member states and members of the international community to stand in solidarity with the people of Sudan and their political parties and civil society organizations, declare a strong and clear message of disapproval to the current election processes, and make it crystal clear to the government that the results of such processes would not be recognized by the international and regional community. We are also asking the international and regional community to stand in solidarity with the Sudanese people in their quest for a peaceful effort to free themselves from the atrocious murderous regime of Omer el Bashir, who, for the last 25 years, have ruled Sudan with impunity.

We believe, as you may well know, the current preparations leading to the GO IT ALONE general elections are conducted in an unconducive environment for the following reasons:

(1) The unprecedented escalation of war by the government of Sudan in South Kordofan/Nuba Mountains, Darfur and the Blue Nile States;

(2) The confiscation of freedom of assembly and organization by the National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS), which has made it impossible for political parties and civil society organizations to campaign or organize rallies even within their own premises;

(3) The restriction of the freedom of press imposed by NISS and its control of all public media outlets in favor of the ruling National Congress Party (NCP);

(4) The arbitrary arrests and detentions of political and civil society leaders such as Farooq Abu Essa, Amin Mekki Medani and Farah Agar, for an extended periods beyond the provisions of the law;

(5) The absolute control of the NCP and NISS of the National Election Commission (NEC) and other bodies responsible for the elections preparations and in fact these instruments became the tools for the NCP to rig the elections; and

The GO IT ALONE elections will undermine and put an end to all positive engagements and attempts by the African Union and other international actors to bring a peaceful solution to the Sudan crisis through negotiations.

We believe that the insistence of the NCP to conduct these elections under such unfavorable conditions and with complete disregard to international, regional and national calls to do otherwise, will push the situations in the Sudan to unprecedented levels of complications.

Therefore, we ask your august organizations to mount high pressure on the government of Sudan to cancel these elections and embark in serious negotiations with the opposition, represented by the Sudan Call Forces, and according to the principles enshrined in the Berlin Declaration in order to bring peace and stability to the Sudan and the region. Otherwise, the Sudan Call Forces will have no option other than to do its utmost to bring down this regime by all means possible and to establish a new rule that represents and responds to the needs and aspirations of the people of Sudan.
