Sudan’s President, Omar al-Bashir, has stressed the importance of reaching a consensus among the Nile basin countries on The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), urging the three parties to work hard to overcome difficulties and reach agreement in the interest of the three countries.
This came during the meeting of al-Bashir with Ethiopian Foreign Minister Tedros Adhanom on Thursday in which the latter briefed the Sudan’s president on the process of dialogue among the three countries on the Ethiopian dam.
Sudan’s Foreign Minister, Ali Karti said in press statements that the meeting dealt with bilateral relations and ways of strengthening cooperation in economic and social areas, adding that there are aspects in the dialogue among the three countries on the dam haven’t completed yet.
On his part, Ethiopia's Foreign Minister said that he has briefed the President on the progress of talks on the Ethiopian dam between the three countries that seek to serve the interests of all parties involved in the dam.
Egypt fears that the construction of the 4.3 billion dollar dam project will diminish its water share which is a source of water to millions people of the desert nation.
Up on completion by 2017, the Grand Ethiopian renaissance dam will have electricity generating capacity of 6,000 megawatt.
Currently the power plant project which will be Africa’s largest is 36% completed and will take the east African nation up to six years to fill the dam’s 74 billion cubic-meter reservoir.
