Britain called on Friday Sudanese Authorities to allow a new credible investigation of allegations of raping at least 221 women and girls in Sudan's Darfur region late last year by Sudanese soldiers
“On two nights, witnesses said, soldiers forced large groups of men to the outskirts of Tabit, leaving the women and children vulnerable to attacks in their homes. The soldiers threatened and beat the men throughout the night,” HRW said.
British Minister of state for the Foreign Office, Joyce Anelay said “I am particularly concerned by the findings of the Human Rights Watch report. These are extremely serious allegations,”
Anelay further said that HRW report brings to lights the need carry out “open investigation” about what happened in Tabit.
“We continue to support the call for that investigation,” she said.
Human Rights Watch on Wednesday accused Sudanese soldiers of raping at least 221 women and girls in Sudan's Darfur region late last year after the United Nations said U.N.-African Union attempts to investigate were blocked by Khartoum.
The group said 15 survivors, one female witness and 23 other credible sources had given it information of mass rapes committed between Oct. 30 and Nov. 1 in the Darfur town of Tabit. It said it had collected names and other information on 221 victims.
The mass rape of women and girls in Tabit may amount to crimes against humanity," it said.
On Thursday, the UN deputy secretary-general Jan Eliasson said concerned by the findings of HRW on the alleged mass rape and urged the Sudanese presidential assistant Ibrahim Ghandour to allow full investigation on the incident.
