The pro-government General Union of Sudanese Journalists (GUSJ) has expressed its deep concern over the confiscation of a number of newspapers by the country’s National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) , the latest of which was Akhir Lahza newspaper, stressing its fully rejection to the prior censorship being imposed on Al-Saiha newspaper during the past period
In a statement is issued on Tuesday, GUSJ considered that confiscation of any newspaper after printing and prior censorship is illegal actions that could affect freedom of the press, hoping that NISS to stop its extraordinary measures in dealing with the press and to refer any breaches committed by the papers to the rule of law instead of using procedures that harm the climate of freedoms in the country.
The Union called on the journalists to an active dialogue between the journalism and the security service to govern to the law away from the extraordinary measures.
The NISS recently intensified its crackdown on the Sudanese press, accusing them of crossing the red lines through publishing reports which adversely impact the national security. On 19 May, the Sudanese presidency delivered a firm warning to media outlets on its coverage of items that “pose a danger to national security and the country as a whole”.
In the past, authorities in Sudan have censored publications in advance by dispatching NISS agents to the newsrooms, but are now resorting to a new strategy in which they confiscate publications after they are printed, thus forcing newspapers to incur heavy financial losses, CPJ research shows.
