Jan 25, 2015-Khartoum-SudaneseOnline-Head of the African Union High Level Implementation Panel on Sudan (AUHIP), Thabo Mbeki, has conveyed to the national dialogue mechanism, known as (7+7) committee, the approval by the chairman of Sudan Liberation Army-Abdul Wahid (SLA-AW), Abdul Wahid Nur to participate in comprehensive peace process if Khartoum’s Government gives guarantees.
In press statements after the meeting with Mbeki on Saturday, the representative of the ruling National Congress Party (NCP), Mustafa Osman Ismail, disclosed absence of three members of the opposition parties from the meeting, noting that their committee submitted a detailed report to Mbeki on the mechanism's work in the past
Ismail pointed out that they told him their readiness to send a delegation to the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa to meet the armed movements, revealing that the former South African president will meet with the president Omar al-Bashir to set a date to start the conference of the dialogue
Al-Bashir launched a national dialogue initiative last January in which he urged opposition parties and rebels alike to join the dialogue table to discuss all the pressing issues.
But the initiative faced serious setback after rebel groups and leftist parties refused to join the dialogue and after the NUP withdrew from the process in protest of al-Mahdi’s brief arrest earlier this year.
The opposition alliance of the National Consensus Forces (NCF) also refused to participate and instead called for removing restrictions on freedoms, releasing political prisoners and establishing a transitional government.
