Groups of militiamen assaulted and injured a number of residents of El Salam camp in South Darfur on Monday. The security situation at the camp is worsening since more than a week.
Sheikh Mahjoub Adam Tabaldiya told Radio Dabanga that a group of seven militiamen in a Land Cruiser raided the south-eastern part of El Salam camp (Centre 10) on Monday at about 10 am. They threatened to burn the camp, if the displaced would go out to collect firewood and straw.
Another group of gunmen attacked displaced collecting firewood in the area of Ghireiga, 7 km south of the camp. They severely beat them with their whips. “Abkora Eisa Adam and El Zein Adam Ali sustained serious injuries.”
The sheikh said that since more than a week the security situation at El Salam camp is getting worse again. “We have a siege-like situation, especially at the southern part of the camp, where large numbers of militiamen are haunting the area. They assault, beat, and threaten to kill anyone who leaves the camp to collect firewood or straw.”
He added that the authorities and Unamid have received reports of all the incidents that occurred inside and outside the camp, “but no actions have been taken”, and called via Radio Dabanga for “protection, eviction of these Janjaweed, and a prohibition for anyone to enter the camp with weapons”.
