Khartoum-SudaneseOnline-The spokesman of the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF), Colonel Al-Sawarmi Khalid Sa’ad, announced on Monday that the army repulsed quick attacks launched by the Sudan People Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) on Blanga area, south of Kadugli, the capital of Southern Kordofan, pointing out that the attacks were random and some shells targeted another sites near Kadugli
Sa’ad confirmed that the situation is fully stable in Kadugli, adding that the citizens there practice their live normally, stressing that the SAF will continue to deploy their troops to crush the rebellion, noting that the periodic sporadic attacks launched by SPLM-N aim to distract the SAF from its primary targets
Southern Kordofan was a key battleground during Sudan’s 1983-2005 civil war. Many in the Nuba Mountains sided with the then rebel SPLA, which has now become the official army of South Sudan. Now they find themselves on the wrong side of the border from former comrades as the South Sudan separated from the north.
Khartoum says fighting began after it tried to disarm SPLA forces in Kadugli. However, eyewitnesses say that it was a pre-planned operation by the SAF and aligned militia. Nuba activists are clear it is not a North-South conflict: rather they say it is a battle to protect basic rights and their way of life.
