AU appoints special rapporteur to end child marriage

Khartoum-The African Union has named Dr. Fatima Dalaj as special rapporteur to end the minor marriage. This came in a meeting at the African Union premises in Addis Ababa last week.

In a statement, the AU said that the marriage of minors have become a serious issue in the African continent, where the statistics show that one out of three involved child marriage.

The statement said that the special rapporteur will conduct a fact-finding mission on the violations, work with government, states, governments, civil society organizations and effective actors to end the child marriage.

The statement said that the rapporteur will submit annual reports to the African Union, and will coordinate with the ministers of social affairs to launch an African Union campaign to end the child marriage in Africa.
