KHARTOUM

(

3 Oct

.) -

The Sudanese Congress Party (SCP) announced on Thursday that all its detained members were freed, on the eve of the religious holiday known as Eid el Adha.

Kamun Mohamed Adam, Zein Isa Mohamed, Mohamed Yusuf, Abdallahi Hassan, Ramzi Mubarak, and Ibrahim Guevara have been released. They were detained last month as the commemorations of the September 2013 protests approached.

The political secretary of the opposition party, Mastour Ahmed, told Radio Dabanga that the security authorities had arrested a number of party members during the past few days. “It was part of a plan to thwart the memorial services of the martyrs of the protests in September 2013.”

He described the campaign of arrests as “fear of the regime” for political activists. “They were arrested without any charges laid upon them,” Mastour Ahmed stressed. “The arrests happened simultaneously with the session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva... That confirms that the government insists on violating human rights.”
