In Nierteti locality, Central Darfur, two militiamen attempted to rape a displaced woman on Sunday. The day before, gunmen injured a school student, because he refused to hand them his mobile. Farmers in the locality complain about extortion by militiamen.
Speaking to Radio Dabanga, an eyewitness said that two men on horses assaulted Salwa Sherif (22) on her farmland in the area of Khor Ramla on Sunday evening.
“They beat her with their rifles, trying to rape her. She resisted, and they fled. She is now lying in bed at home in a bad condition.”
Mobile phone
A group of militiamen attacked school student Mohamed Hamed Yagoub (12) of the Garsila camp for the displaced in Nierteti locality on Saturday.
“Yagoub was returning on his donkey from the farmland he had worked on, when a group of gunmen demanded his mobile telephone. He refused, whereupon they beat him in a most appalling way,” one of his relatives told Radio Dabanga. “We took him to the hospital of Nierteti in critical condition, and filed a complaint at the police station.”
“Protection fees”
In the areas of Ki Beih, in the northern part of Nierteti locality, and Kubri El Nahal, south of Nierteti town, militiamen have imposed “protection fees” on farmers.
“They told us to pay SDG 80 ($14) for every two acres, besides sixandnbsp;malwaandnbsp;(3.145 kg) of sorghum this week,” a farmer reported to Radio Dabanga from Kubri El Nahal. He appealed to the authorities to put an end to the extortion of the farmers in the locality.
