Juba-The rebels in south Sudan led by the former vice president Reik Machar have announced that they were attacked by the government army on Friday, but the later denied the attack.

The spokesman of the rebels has said that the forces of South Sudan President Salva Kiir is now attacking our positions in the oil rich Unity state, saying that another attack in Jonglei state was repulsed.

In response, the spokesman of the South Sudan army denied the attack, saying he has not heard of any battle.

South Sudan has been witnessing fighting between the forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and his former deputy Machar who was relieved in July. The confrontation claimed the lives of thousands of people to be estimated by some observers as 10.000. The fighting has also led to displacement of 700.000 persons from their homes, according to the latest estimations by the UN that receive 76.000 persons in 8 bases in different parts of South Sudan.


After two weeks of difficult talks sponsored by the IGAD in Addis Ababa, the two parties signed last Thursday an agreement on cessation of hostilities that came into on Friday, in 24 hours since the signing of the true.
