A third of Sudan's children suffer from malnutrition: WHO say

Khartoum-The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed concern about the high rates of chronic malnutrition among Sudanese children which reached 1.8 million, representing "one third of the children of Sudan".
In press statements on Sunday, Sudanese Health Ministry that the malnutrition index of the current year has reached 16%, higher than the global ratio specified in this regard, stressing that the acute malnutrition rate of the country is high, adding that nearly half a million Sudanese children suffering from severe acute malnutrition.
The national coordinator of the nutrition programme in Sudan, Salwa Surkati, stressed the need to find quick and realistic solutions to the problems of malnutrition in children, with emphasis on maternal and child health services and implementation of health programmes in this area.
WHO representative in Sudan disclosed that the death of infant malnutrition reached 40%, indicating that the States of Kassala, Gedaref and Red Sea represents the highest malnutrition rates because of the difficulty of getting water and negative practices regarding environmental sanitation.
