Muslim scholars call on charitable organizations to intensify their efforts in Sudan

Doha-The International Union of Muslim Scholars has called on the charitable organizations to intensify efforts to provide relief to the victims of the heavy rains and floods that swept many parts of Sudan.

In a statement it issued on Tuesday, The International Union of Muslim Scholars said that it has been watching closely consequences of the floods such as demolishing of thousands of houses, killing and wounding of many lives and displacement of tens of thousands of Sudanese who became now homeless and without housing, medication and food.

"To address this painful humanitarian situation, the Union calls on Islamic and Arabic nation and humanitarian relief organizations to do their duty toward the afflicted brethren in the Sudan in response to our faith and fraternal duty" the statement added

According to the latest government figures, heavy rains and flash floods has affected some 530,000 people across Sudan and destroyed or damaged 74,000 homes.

The figures were cited by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in its weekly humanitarian bulletin for Sudan, for the week ending 18 August.

The government’s Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC) says the figures are initial estimates only, with the numbers set to rise even further as more detailed assessments are carried out.

Khartoum is the hardest hit state in the country, with an estimated 84,000 people affected by flood waters, which also caused extensive damage to houses and infrastructure
