Prof. Thomas T. George Brief History

    Prof. Thomas T. George

    Brief History

I was born on 16 August, 1939 in Sudan. In 1966, I graduated from Khartoum University. I was the Director of the Fisheries Research Center, Agriculture Research Corporation (ARC) during 1975-1985 and was promoted to Professor in 1985. In 1990 I was a landed-immigrant in Canada. I am a recognized consultant by United Nations FAO, UNDP, WHO, Arab Organization AFC, AOAD and Canada CIDA, IDRC.

I have been a career scientist since 1966 and am well-traveled with many credentials in international aquaculture and fisheries as a scientist, an independent Consultant or Team-leader with CIDA, WHO, FAO, UNDP and AOAD. I have been an active participant or chairperson in international conferences, workshops and exhibitions held in Asian, African, Arab, European and North American countries.
As an FAO Consultant in 1975, I surveyed all the fish and shellfish introductions (positive/ negative impacts) in Africa and prepared a report for the Committee of Inland Fisheries of Africa (CIFA) Meeting which was held in Accra, Ghana in 1975. In 1976, I participated with a film (Aquaculture, Democratic Republic of The Sudan) in the First FAO/UNDP/ Government of Japan International Aquaculture Conference held in Kyoto, Japan. Also, I participated as Head of a Session in the First Arab Symposium on Aquaculture of Fish and Shellfish held in Hyatt Regency Hotel, Kuwait in 1982 and in the release of the Aquaculture Strategy Plan for Canada in 1995 by DFO Minister Brian Tobin at Prince George Hotel, Halifax, Nova Scotia. In 1975, I prepared a detailed National Plan for Aquaculture Development in the Sudan at the FAO Regional Workshop on Aquaculture Planning and Development in Africa, Accra, Ghana. In October 2011, I prepared The Aquaculture Development Strategy Plan and The Action Plan for the Gazira State, Sudan. In 1995, I participated as an aquaculture consultant in the FAO 50’s Anniversary which was held in Chateau Frontenac Hotel, Quebec City, Canada where it was established in 1945..
I planned, formulated and executed several aquaculture projects funded by IDRC, WHO, IFS, and the World Bank as the Project Leader. In addition, I have promoted integrated agro-aquaculture in rural areas and the use of fish as biological control agents (grass carp and tilapia) for aquatic weeds, Bilharzias’ snails and larvae of malaria-transmitting mosquitoes. I could breed the grass carp by induced breeding (hypophysation) for the first time in Africa. In 1995, I contributed in lifting the ban on the culture of tilapia in Canada imposed by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and published in 1996 the first paper in Canada on its culture potential. In 2003, I assisted Al Neelain University, Khartoum, Sudan, in establishing the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture within the Faculty of Agricultural Technology and Fish Science as its Head and graduated the first batch of students in 2006.
Throughout the years, I have published scientific papers in international journals, contributed significantly to public awareness on aquaculture and fisheries through multi-media presentations and interviews: TV, radio and the press.
