Donna- Introduction of Willard Johnson, Professor Emeritus of Political Science, MIT as Moderator

Dr. Willard R. Johnson is MIT Professor Emeritus of Political Science. During thirty-two years (1964-1996) of teaching and research at MIT, he specialized in topics relating to African studies, comparative and international politics (especially as regards poor or developing countries), and promotion of development in American inner-city areas. His research and activism has sought to foster the achievement of equity, freedom, economic and political development by historically victimized peoples.

He is a founder of and a Senior Advisor to the Boston Pan-African Forum Inc., which fosters public education about and engagement with the African world. He was one of the founders and served on the national Boards of Directors of TransAfrica and the TransAfrica Forum. He also founded and led the TransAfrica Boston Chapter and its "Free South Africa Movement" campaign that was instrumental in making the banning of South African Kruggerrand coins part of the national U.S. anti-apartheid agenda. He helped to establish and/or lead a number of other organizations that have fostered among professional scholars as well as the general public a sense of activism and responsibility for African liberation and development, and for U.S. foreign policies and actions respecting underdeveloped countries that are more mutually beneficial.

Willard Johnson, Intro to panel program and intro of panelists:
    Panelists:
    · Khalid Kodi, Sudanese, BFA, College of Fine Arts, Khartoum, Sudan; MFA Painting, Massachusetts College of Art. He is on the faculty of Boston College and Mass Art.

Professor Kodi will address the issues of cultural diversity and will expand the discussion of linking to the images in the exhibition and the accompanying book. An accomplished artist-who’s work is often political. Kodi would like to see more politics in art and at one time stated, "The world is moving into different times, and art makes people aware of that." Professor Kodi is currently on the faculty of Boston College and Mass Art. He has been in the US for 13 years.

    · Ambassador Timothy Carney, co-author of Sudan: The Land and the People. Timothy Carney served as the US Ambassador to Sudan from 1995 through 1997. The format is to have each participant give a 10 min. presentation with a Q&A to follow. The intent is to look at the whole of Sudan and the complexities, diversity, peace process, and inevitably Darfur. What we hope to accomplish is to see a broader view of the Sudan, which the book and show deliver. You can go to www.cmacusa.org for information.

    Note:
I am hoping that Adieu Riak will join us. We spoke briefly and she was interested in participating,, but I do not have a confirmation.

Essays by Timothy Carney and Victoria Butler

Armed internal conflict, drought, and famine have plagued Sudan – Africa’s largest and most culturally complex country – since its independence in 1956. A comprehensive peace agreement signed in January 2005 ended Sudan’s bloody civil war, putting its people on a challenging journey to create a nation in which all Sudanese can live and prosper together. Sudan: the Land and the People is the first illustrated book to depict the whole of the country. In text and images, this volume not only illuminates the difficulties confronting Sudanese but also highlights the enormous and often overlooked economic and human potential of the country.

In a trio of thoughtful essays, authors Timothy Carney and Victoria Butler focus on Sudan’s history, land and people. More than a quarter million years ago, the first Homo sapiens lived in Sudan’s Nile River Valley, and five thousand years ago Sudan gave Africa its first black kingdom. The authors clearly recount the country’s more recent past, putting Sudan’s modern conflicts in historical context. A chapter on the physical landscape draws attention to the dominant influence of the Nile River on Sudanese peoples, culture, and economy. A final essay explores the rich blend of African and Arab peoples and cultures that give Sudanese society its great diversity as well as its turbulence.

Bringing all of Sudan to vivid life are the stunning images of acclaimed photographer Michael Freeman, who traveled the length and breadth of the country over a period of two years. His unforgettable photographs illustrate a grand, vast geography from savannahs and swamps to rocky hills and desert. He visited all the major towns in every region and some villages that no Westerner had seen in decades. Nomads, herders, and farmers, teacher and students, lawyers and doctors, industrialists and laborers – all inhabit the pages of theis book. The pictures show Sudanese getting married, having children, and growing old. They capture Muslims, Christians, and followers of traditional religions. Freeman’s camera has caught, as former President Jimmy Carter notes in his foreword, “the essential humanity of Sudan.”

Re: Sudan:The Land and the People New Book and Program (Re: Khalid Kodi)

    Foreword: By Jimmy Carter
    July 4, 2005 | 12:39PM (EDT)
Sudan is the most ethnically, geographically, and culturally diverse country in Africa. Yet, most people only think of it in terms of large scale suffering and seemingly endless strife. Hundreds of ethnic groups form a mosaic of Arab and African, Moslem, Christian and animist, nomads and farmers. The brutality of nearly 50 years of civil wars and a succession of humanitarian crises have retarded economic development and obscured the possibility of creating a truly plural society. The peace agreement of January 9, 2005 brings an historic opportunity for the people of Sudan to put violence behind them. Despite the enormous challenges, there is now the chance for all Sudanese to forge new ways to share the natural, cultural and historic bounty of their country, living together in peace and mutual respect.

The Carter Center is deeply committed to alleviating suffering in Sudan and helping to find ways to foster a lasting peace between its various peoples. In addition to supporting the peace process, the Center has been working to eradicate Guinea worm disease throughout the country and control river blindness along the tributaries of the Nile. I have witnessed the heartfelt desire of Sudanese -- be they Arab or African, fishermen or farmers, bricklayers or camel herders – for justice, peace and a better life for their children.

Michael Freeman's camera has caught the essential humanity in Sudan. He reminds us that life, even in the most difficult times, has its joy and that children must be nourished and pushed to achieve their very best. The striking parallels and borrowings of north from south and south from north should shake every Sudanese as well, adding to the recognition that, like all people, they are more similar than they are different and that, in the end, all want much the same future for themselves and their families.

I am very pleased to see this book and am certain it will broaden understanding of Sudan, not only outside the country, but among Sudanese themselves. This understanding is vital if the country is to begin to realize its potential.

    - Jimmy Carter, 2005

Re: Sudan:The Land and the People New Book and Program (Re: Khalid Kodi)

Thank you Khalid Kodi for informing us about the activities of some of the genuine friends of Sudan. Many people, all over the world, have very warm memories about Sudan and the Sudanese People. This is, of course, part of the charm and appeal of our country, and part of its tragedy, and self-denial.
