Quote: 12 January 2006 – (Upper Nile) – A COMMANDER OF THE SUDAN PEOPLE’S LIBERATION ARMY SAYS THE S-P-L-A PUBLICLY EXECUTED AT LEAST 8 PEOPLE WITHOUT TRIAL BETWEEN OCTOBER AND DECEMBER LAST YEAR IN KIER PAYAM OF LUAKPINY COUNTY IN EASTERN UPPER NILE.
IN AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH SUDAN RADIO SERVICE, BRIGADIER JAMES GATIEK DIAR CONFIRMED THE EXECUTIONS—BY FIRING SQUAD AND OTHER MEANS. HE SAID THAT THE EXECUTIONS WERE NECESSARY AS PART OF WHAT THE BRIGADIER CHARACTERIZED AS A CAMPAIGN TO END THE “ALARMING ETHNIC AND REVENGE KILLINGS” AMONG ARMED CIVILIANS IN THE AREA.
THE BRIGADIER SAID THAT ONE OF 6 MEN EXECUTED BY FIRING SQUAD WAS A WANTED MURDERER AND WAS ACCUSED OF KILLING A SUB-CHIEF, MAKER NYITH, IN COLD BLOOD IN LUAKPINY COUNTY LAST AUGUST.
AMONG THE EXECUTED WERE ALSO 2 WOMEN BURIED ALIVE FOR ALLEGEDLY COMMITTING ADULTERY. BUT THE 2 MEN ACCUSED OF COMMITTING ADULTERY WITH THE WOMEN WHERE SET FREE AFTER PAYING 40 HEAD OF CATTLE EACH TO THE OFFENDED HUSBANDS.
OUR CORRESPONDENT IN THE AREA REPORTS THAT PEOPLE IN THE AREA EXPRESSED MIXED FEELINGS ABOUT THE EXECUTIONS, BUT SPEAKING TO SUDAN RADIO SERVICE, A HEALTH WORKER IN RUPBUOT PAYAM, MISS NYAKUAYE DIEW, CONDEMNED THE KILLING OF THE WOMEN ACCUSED OF COMMITTING ADULTERY.
[NYAKUAYE DIEW]: “IT’S NOT GOOD TO KILL THEM. I WANT THEM TO BE TAKEN TO A LOCAL COURT. THEY COULDN’T JUST BE KILLED ANYHOW OR BURIED ALIVE. THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN HANDED OVER TO HEAD CHIEFS BECAUSE ONE OF THE REASONS OF COMMITTING ADULTERY IS WHEN THE MAN IS NOT PRODUCING CHILDREN WITH THE WOMAN. SHE CANNOT STAY WITHOUT CHILDREN.”
RESIDENTS IN THE AREA ALSO ALLEGE THAT THE S-P-L-A AUTHORITIES ARE HOLDING MORE PEOPLE IN LUEKPINY AND ULANG COUNTIES AWAITING EXECUTION |
