With only days remaining until the historic July 9th secession of South Sudan, yet another war is looming on the horizon. In the past weeks, (northern) Sudanese president Al-Bashir’s regime has started implementing its genocidal policies by waging war against the people of the Nuba Mountains and Southern Kordofan.
Heavy aerial bombardment and tanks have been excessively used, and the human tragedy has reached new levels of mass atrocity. More than 500 have been killed, and 100,000 civilians have fled their homes looking for refuge in the woods, despite the rainy season.
The Sudanese regime has now aggressively forced a media blockade of Kadugli, the capital of Southern Kordofan where horrendous crimes have been perpetrated, massive number of people have been detained including activists and political leaders.
Reports from multiple sources in Kadugli have confirmed that Al-Bashir and key figures in his regime are directing the operations from Khartoum. Ahmed Haroun, already indicted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes (for mass killings of innocent civilians in Darfur) is directing the vicious military operation from the Sudan Armed Forces’ head quarter in Kadugli.
The NGOs and the UN organizations have pulled out their staff from the area. It is a disaster that requires an urgent international intervention before the situation gets worse. Canada has a role to play to stop the ongoing killing of the indigenous people of Nuba and can help mitigate the humanitarian catastrophe in the region.
We urge every media outlet, every individual and every civil society organization to consistently and persistently work on initiatives to help the women, children and men of the Nuba Mountains and Southern Kordofan to have safe haven, food, medicine and their basic human rights and necessities.
