 Rest in Peace Wangari Maathai

Wangari Maathai, an African Nobel Laureate, passed away on Sunday, 25th September 2011, at the age of 71.
She had been a professor at the University of Nairobi and at several other institutions, and was the founder of the Green Belt Movement. She was also a civil society and women's rights activist, a former parliamentarian, and the author of several books.
Below is a tribute to the African woman who ever won the Nobel Prize for Peace, written by Professor Thandika Mkandawire of the London School of Economics and former Executive Secretary of CODESRIA:
Wangari Maathai was an amazing person. I first met her in Kampala in November 1990 during the CODESRIA Symposium on Academic Freedom. She arrived a day after the symposium. I was informed of her presence and her need for accommodation. I went looking for her and found her in the lobby of the hotel with a small sack of her belongings she had taken with her. When I made the obvious point that it was too late for the symposium, she replied, with that great smile that was her trade mark: "I, know but I made it".
In Kenya of the time anyone employed in state institutions (including universities) had to seek state permission to travel out of the country to attend a conference. On this occasion the Government simply denied Kenyan academics the permission to travel to attend what must have been perceived as a subversive conference. And so Wangari traveled on land. Obviously there was no way they could stop Wangari.

AWID Deeply Saddened By The Loss Of Dr. Wangari Maathai, A Pioneer In The Environment And Women’s Rights Movements

Today, we mourn the loss of a dear colleague and trailblazer in the social justice, women’s rights, and environmental movements in Africa and globally, Dr. Wangari Maathai.

Dr. Maathai founded the Green Belt Movement in Kenya in 1977, which educated and mobilized thousands of rural women into planting trees and protecting the environment. The movement has until today planted over 45 million trees around Kenya. She was a pioneer in establishing the concept of sustainable development, and creating a framework of environmental protection that located women’s lives and livelihoods at its heart. Dr. Maathai’s work and perspective are a testimony to holistic development models that integrally link environmental justice to broader social, political, and economic rights, including women’s rights. In Dr. Maathai’s own words, “In the process of education that takes place when someone joins the Green Belt Movement, women have become aware that planting trees or fighting to save forests from being chopped down is part of a larger mission to create a society that respects democracy, decency, adherence to the rule of law, human rights, and the rights of women.”
Among her many stellar achievements, Dr. Maathai was a leader who opened the door for women in many avenues. She was a woman of many firsts. She was the first woman in East and Central Africa to receive a Ph.D. in 1971 and become a Professor and Department Chair at the University in Kenya. In 2002 she served as a Member of Parliament and then Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Environment in Kenya and in 2004 was the first African woman and environmentalist to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
Today, AWID would like to specially commemorate the immense contribution of Dr. Maathai’s work to the advancement of women’s rights. She was a formidable voice in highlighting the gendered impact of environmental destruction on the lives of poor rural women in the global South. Dr. Maathai not only empowered grassroots women to take the lead on environmental protection but she also informed the world about the crucial role women already play in protecting the environment and implementing alternative models of development that are sustainable and environmentally and socially just. She additionally opened important avenues for women’s participation in crucial global environmental decision-making platforms like the debates on climate change.
“In the current context of a broad systemic crisis of food, energy and the environment, heightened inequality and propagation of unsustainable global development models, Dr. Maathai will be deeply missed for her pioneering work and brilliance by women’s rights advocates around the world. She was an inspiration to many of us and will be constantly remembered as we strive to place women’s rights at the centre of decision-making in the global environmental and sustainable development arenas,” says Lydia Alpizar, Executive Director of AWID.

توفِّيت الأحد عن عمر ناهز الـ 71 عاما الكينية وانغاري ماثاي، أوَّل أفريقية تفوز بجائزة نوبل للسلام ووواحدة من أبرز دعاة السلام وحماية البيئة في القارة ، وذلك بعد صراع مرير مع مرض السرطان.
ففي بيان أصدرته الاثنين، قالت “حركة الحزام الأخضر” (Green Built Movement)، التي أسَّستها وانغاري قبل أكثر من 30 عاماً وغرست حوالي 30 مليون شجرة في أفريقيا:
(بمزيد من الحزن والأسى تعلن حركة الحزام الأخضر رحيل مؤسستها ورئيستها، العالمة وانغاري موتا ماثاي، في الخامس والعشرين من سبتمبر/أيلول من عام 2011، في مستشفى نيروبي، وذلك بعد معركة شجاعة وطويلة مع مرض السرطان).
وذكر البيان أن (أحبَّتها كانوا إلى جانبها لدى وفاتها).
وأضاف: ( إن الرحيل المبكِّر البروفيسورة ماثاي خسارة كبيرة لكل أولئك الذين عرفوها، كأمٍّ وكقريبة وكزميلة عمل وكقدوة وكبطلة، وكذلك الأمر بالنسبة لأولئك الذين أُعجبوا بتصميمها بجعل العالم مكانا أكثر صحة وسلاما).
وكانت ماثاي قد فازت بجائزة نوبل للسلام في عام 2004، وذلك لدورها بحماية حقوق الإنسان والدفاع عن قضايا المرأة وترسيخ مبدأ الشفافية في الحكم، وإسهاماتها في مجال حماية البيئة.
وفي خطاب قبولها للجائزة، قالت ماثاي إنها تأمل بأن يكون نجاحها محفِّزا للنساء الأخريات للانخراط ولعب دور أكثر نشاطا في المجتمع.
وأضافت: “آمل أن يشجِّعهن ذلك على رفع أصواتهن واحتلال مساحات أكبر في القيادة”.
وخاضت ماثاي، والتي عينها الأمين العام للأمم المتحدة بان كي مون، مؤخراً “سفيرة للسلام” مع التركيز على قضايا البيئة وتغيُّر المناخ، معارك طويلة وشرسة للدفاع عن حقوق الإنسان، بالإضافة إلى قيامها بدور كبير في توفير مساعدات للفئات الأكثر فقراً في أفريقيا.
وأصبحت ماثاي، التي ولدت في الأول من أبريل عام 1940 لمزارعين في منطقة “نيري” الجبلية بكينيا، أوَّل امرأة في شرق القارة ووسطها تحصل على درجة الدكتوراه، بحسب ما أورد موقع الأمم المتحدة.
وفي عام 1977 عملت أستاذة مساعدة في علم التشريح البيطري بجامعة نيروبي. وفي العام نفسه أسَّست “حركة الحزام الأخضر”، وهي منظمة بيئية شعبية ساعدت النساء وأسرهنَّ في زراعة ملايين الأشجار في عموم كينيا، بغرض حماية البيئة وتعزيز سبل مستدامة للعيش فيها.
كما قادت أيضا حملة من أجل الديمقراطية وحقوق الإنسان والحفاظ على البيئة، وقامت بدور رئيسي في حملة لإلغاء ديون أفريقيا وحماية الغابات العامة، وتم تعيينها لاحقاً وزيرة للبيئة في الحكومة الكينية.
وكانت ماثاي قد اعتُقلت مرَّات عدَّة في عهد الرئيس الكيني السابق دانيال أراب موي، وتعرَّضت إلى حملة تشهير وتشويه سمعة.
وفي عام 2008، شاركت في مظاهرة احتجاجية ضد خطة الرئيس الكيني القاضية بزيادة عدد الوزراء في حكومته، وقد استخدمت السلطات الغاز المسيل للدموع لتفريق المشاركين في تلك المظاهرة التي أُصيبت فيها.
