U.S. Navy Hospital Ship Enlisted for Haiti Mission
By Associated Press The military says the Baltimore-based Navy hospital ship USNS Comfort will leave late this weekend for earthquake-stricken Haiti.
Lt. Cmdr. Heidi Lenzini of the U.S. Southern Command in Miami said Thursday the floating hospital will be on an open-ended humanitarian mission.
The Navy is staffing the nearly 900-foot ship with hundreds of doctors, nurses and technicians from the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda. The Comfort has 12 operating rooms and space for 1,000 hospital beds.
The Comfort visited Haiti in April as part of a four-month mission to the Caribbean and Latin America. It also responded to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York and to hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005.
