BLUFFER'S GUIDE TO DAN BROWN BESTSELLER
Dan Brown's hotly awaited new novel The Lost Symbol is breaking all sorts of records.
It has become the fastest-selling hardback adult novel in the UK, selling 300,000 copies in 36 hours since it was published on Tuesday.
Yet again, Harvard Professor Robert Langdon takes centre stage, just as he did in Brown's previous hits The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons.
This time the novel centres on the hidden world of freemasonry in Washington DC with Langdon - played by Tom Hanks in the films - trying to track his kidnapped mentor Peter Solomon by cracking codes and solving cryptic clues.
Brown named the character after John Langdon, a professor of typography and creator of ambigrams - typographical designs that can be read from several different angles - which feature heavily in the books.
And in the Lost Symbol Professor Langdon is invited to Washington to give a lecture but finds Solomon's severed hand - forcing him to pursue the hidden meaning of an ancient Masonic symbol.

FOUNDING FATHERS
The Founding Fathers of the United States were key figures in the American Revolution, signed the 1776 Declaration of Independence from Britain and drafted the US Constitution.
They included first President George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton.
Dan Brown claims that at least half of the Founding Fathers were Freemasons.
However, the phrase "Founding Fathers" was used for the first time only in 1916 in a speech by Warren Harding - who became his country's President in 1921.
SQUARE AND COMPASS
The single most identifiable Masonic symbol, the square and compass hints at the group's roots as a stonemasons' collective.
They form two of Freemasonry's Three Great Lights - the other is the Bible. The square is an emblem of virtue reflecting the belief we must "square our actions by the square of virtue with all mankind". The pair of compasses represents our strength to "circumscribe our desires and keep our passions within due bounds".
INVISIBLE COLLEGE
With origins dating back to 1645, the Invisible College was an organisation whose members included Britain's brightest scientists and philosophers who met regularly to exchange ideas.
The aim was to learn by experimentation and those who attended included architect Sir Christopher Wren, who designed St Paul's Cathedral, and Irish scientist Robert Boyle. The college evolved into the Royal Society of London for the Improvement of Natural Knowledge, which still exists, and has its HQ in London.

It holds the remains of Gen Albert Pike, who fought for the breakaway Confederacy in the American Civil War. He also wrote Morals and Dogma of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, published in 1871. The temple has 250,000 books, one of the world's largest Masonic literature collections.
Completed in 1915, the building is a copy of the Mausoleum of the Mausolos, based in present-day Turkey and one of the ancient Seven Wonders of the World.
THE SOLOMON KEY
When Dan Brown announced this new book in 2006, he initially called it The Solomon Key.
Legend has it that the Key of Solomon is a book of magic and witchcraft containing invocations and curses.
It was said to be hidden beneath the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem.
According to Brown, the book was so powerful the Church would stop at nothing to get hold of it.
As a result a group of nine knights, known as The Order of Poor Knights of Christ and the Temple of Solomon - or the Knights Templar - were created to retrieve and guard the documents.
HAND OF THE MYSTERIES
It Was said anyone who could decipher the meaning of the symbols on the hand - a key, sun, star, lantern and crown - would gain divine power.
The hand was an invitation to join the rare few in charge of guarding the secret wisdom for all the ages. Others believe it is the key to transformation from being a man to a god.
NOETIC SCIENCE
The Institute of Noetic Science was created in 1973 by former astronaut Edgar Mitchell and industrialist Paul Temple.
It features several times in The Lost Symbol and Dr Katherine Solomon is described as a "noetic scientist".
Noetic means "inner knowing" and the IoNS aims to combine science with holistic programmes.
Or, as they put it: "Noetic sciences explore the 'inner cosmos' of the mind (consciousness, soul, spirit) and how it relates to the 'outer cosmos' of the physical world."
The Institute, based in California, also researches meditation, psychic abilities and the survival of consciousness after death.
KRYPTOS SCULPTURE
Located at the CIA headquarters in Virginia, Jim Sanborn's sculpture, which was unveiled in 1990, is covered in codes - only partially cracked.
The S-shaped copper screen contains four messages. It took nine years for the first one to be decoded: "BETWEEN SUBTLE SHADING AND THE ABSENCE OF LIGHT LIES THE NUANCE OF IQLUSION." Even now controversy rages over its meaning
