قدمت السلطات الإسرائيلية إغراءات عدة لباحثة سعودية تقيم في أوروبا بغية الاطلاع والاستفادة من أبحاثها في الكيمياء الحيوية.
وقالت الباحثة السعودية حياة سندي ، وهي أول امرأة عربية تحصل على الدكتوراه في التقنية الحيوية من جامعة كامبردج، لصحيفة "الوطن" السعودية إن "إسرائيل دعتها أربع مرات للمشاركة في مركز "وايزمان انستتيوت" في تل أبيب، غير أنها رفضت ذلك لإدراكها "خطورة تطبيع البحث العلمي".
وسندي من مواليد مكة ، وأمضت ما يقرب من 13 عاما في بريطانيا حيث حصلت على درجة الدكتوراة في أدوات القياس الكهرومغناطيسية والصوتية من جامعة كامبردج العريقة.
واستطاعت أن تتوصل إلى عدد من الاختراعات العلمية الهامة جعلتها تتبوأ مكانة علمية عالمية رفيعة حيث دعتها أمريكا ضمن وفد ضم 15 من أفضل العلماء في العالم، لاستشراف اتجاهات ومستقبل العلوم.
كما دعتها جامعة بركلي بمدينة كاليفورنيا الأمريكية لتكون واحدة ضمن أبرز ثلاث عالمات، هن: كارل دار، رئيسة بحوث السرطان، والثانية كاثي سيلفر، أول رائدة فضاء، وكانت هي الثالثة.
وكانت الدكتورة سندي قد اخترعت مجسا للموجات الصوتية والمغناطيسية يمكنه تحديد الدواء المطلوب لجسم الإنسان، ويعرف ابتكارها اختصارا بـ"مارس MARS". وتلقت بسبب ابتكارها هذا دعوة من وكالة ناسا التي قدمت لها عرضا مغريا للعمل معهم.
ولابتكارها تطبيقات متعددة في نواحي مختلفة للصناعات الدوائية، وفحوصات الجينات والحمض النووي DNA الخاصة بالأمراض الوراثية، وكذلك المشاريع البحثية لحماية البيئة وقياس الغازات السامة، ويتميز ابتكارها بدقته العالية التى وصلت إلى تحقيق نسبة نجاح في معرفة الاستعداد الجيني للإصابة بالسكري تبلغ 99.1%، بعد أن كانت لا تتجاوز 25%
لم تتلقى د. سندي دعوة من جامعة الملك سعود لارتفاع تكاليف بحوثها .. ولا من جامعة الملك عبدالعزيز لعدم توفر قسم يختص ببحوثها ،، ولا من جامعة الملك فيصل لتخصصها بالعلوم النظرية ،، ولا حتى من جامعة ام القرى لانهم ما جابو خبرها
فقط تلقت دعوة واحده من وزارة التربية والتعليم لتعين مراقبة على الطالبات في مدرسة بإحدى الهجر القريبة من الجوف !

Hayat Sindi

Hayat Sindi is a Saudi medical researcher who was born in Mecca. She has invented a machine combining the effects of light and ultra-sound for use in biotechnology. Her major project is being carried out in partnership with the universities of Exeter and Cambridge.
Sindi's major invention is called MARS (Magnetic Acoustic Resonance Sensor), patented during her PhD work at the Institute of Biotechnology at Cambridge University. Sindi's first degree was in Pharmacology from King's College, London where she was a recipient of Princess Anne's Award for her undergraduate work on allergy.
Along with her scientific activities, Sindi participated in numerous events aimed at raising the awareness of science amongst females, particularly in Saudi Arabia and the Muslim World in general. She is also interested in the problem of brain drain and was an invited speaker at the Jeddah Economic Forum 2005.
Currently, she is a visiting scholar in professor George Whitesides group at Harvard University.

Washington — Hayat Sindi is a woman on a self-described mission: “to change how science and women are viewed in the Middle East.”
Born and raised in Saudi Arabia, Sindi studied biotechnology at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom before coming to the United States to learn how to commercialize scientific discoveries.
Her determination to succeed despite sexism has paid off. Sindi helped found a company, Diagnostics For All (DFA), that is developing inexpensive, disposable medical tests for use in the developing world. DFA won two prestigious business awards and hopes to have prototypes tested in the field by 2010.
In a bold move, Sindi and her colleagues spurned potentially lucrative royalty payments and made DFA a nonprofit company, underscoring Sindi’s determination to help those less fortunate as quickly as possible. (See “Nonprofit Company Develops Diagnostics for Developing World.”)
“Sindi is in a category of her own,” DFA Executive Director James Barber told America.gov. He described her as highly educated and passionate about applying technology to improve the developing world. “She’s a truly remarkable person.”
DIAGNOSTICS FOR ALL
Sindi, a devout Muslim who wears a hijab (head covering), was a visiting scientist in George Whitesides’ laboratory at Harvard University when she took a Harvard Business School course, “Inventing Breakthroughs and Commercializing Science.”
At the time, Whitesides laboratory was working on using paper and adhesive tape to create a device that could reliably and reproducibly measure protein and sugar levels in urine and blood. (See “Three Cents’ Worth of Paper and Tape Help Diagnose Diseases.”)
Inspired by the class, Sindi realized that the paper-based device could form the basis for diagnostic test kits that could be deployed in remote areas of the world where people do not receive adequate medical care.
With Whitesides’ approval, she formed a team of classmates and colleagues to write a business plan and entered the Harvard Business School Business Plan Competition and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) $100K Entrepreneurship Competition.
DFA won both, becoming the first nonprofit company to win the MIT contest.
